Let's talk about Helan Wang because this character is absolutely insufferable and I cannot stop thinking about him. The man claims to be Xu Jichun's father, then when told no, casually pivots to "I can be your stepfather." STEPFAATHER. This is not a man who takes no for an answer. He's been following Eighteenth Lady around pretending to protect her while simultaneously trying to steal her Offeror by getting Xu Jichun to set up an ancestral tablet for him. The audacity is off the charts. And Eighteenth Lady? She's not having it. She specifically refuses to let him come along when she visits Xu Jichun because she's terrified he'll expose her true identity or steal her Offeror. The dynamic between these three is so messy and I'm here for it. She's protective of Xu Jichun in her own chaotic way — she even lies to Helan Wang about him counting offerings, which is such a petty, human thing for a ghost to do. The scene where Eighteenth Lady tries to gossip about Helan Wang to Xu Jichun but can't bring herself to do it because he's actually saying nice things about Helan Wang is genuinely touching in a weird way. She gets angry because he's being too nice, and that anger makes her blurt things out. It's such a specific emotional reaction — jealousy disguised as indignation. Xiang Liwen is another layer of chaos. He appears and disappears like a ghost (literally), scares everyone, threatens to take over Fushan Tower from Meng Yingqiu, and then vanishes. The woman behind Meng Yingqiu says "Xiang Liwen rarely comes here, why didn't you speak up?" and Meng Yingqiu's response is just "Let her be happy for a few more days." That line hit me. There's a tenderness underneath the cold exterior that I didn't expect.
Okay so I need to talk about this one moment because it completely wrecked me. When Qin Ziheng reaches out and takes Mao Xiaoshu's hand to check his temperature, and Mao Xiaoshu is just... reaching and pulling back, reaching and pulling back like he wants to touch but is terrified Qin Ziheng will reject him. And then Qin Ziheng just... takes his hand. Presses it to his own forehead. Like it's the most natural thing in the world. "Not so hot anymore, right? I didn't lie to you." That's it. That's all he says. But Mao Xiaoshu looks DELIGHTED. The text literally says "the mere fact that Qin Ziheng didn't shrink from him, was willing to let him touch, could make him overjoyed." This boy has been ALONE for years. Years. And the simple act of physical contact — not even romantic, just a hand on a forehead — is enough to make him light up like that. It broke my heart a little. And then later when Qin Ziheng asks "Can I touch you?" and Mao Xiaoshu transforms into a cat... that scene is going to stick with me for a while. The trust it takes to let someone touch you when you've spent years alone, that's the whole relationship in miniature. Qin Ziheng sees himself in Mao Xiaoshu — both treated as burdens, both left behind — and that's where the real bond forms. Not through grand gestures but through these tiny, trembling moments of permission.
