The worldbuilding in this chapter is so quietly brilliant because it never stops to explain itself. We're in Heilongjiang Province, mid-November, and the text tells us directly: "would soon enter the deep winter hibernation period, when many goods would become hard to come by." That's it. One sentence and I understand everything about why Feng Wan is rushing to stock up, why ration coupons matter, why withdrawing two thousand yuan at once would make a bank clerk nearly call for the supervisor. The spatial dimension ability is handled with such casualness too—she just tosses money into it like it's a pocket. No exposition, no magic system explanation. The text treats it as normal as the bicycle she retrieves from somewhere. And the supply and marketing cooperative! Shen Mingzhu clutching that hundred yuan like it might burn her, Feng Wan dashing between post offices across the eastern part of the city, the department store with snowflake cream and headscarves, the state-run restaurant where they treat themselves to a hearty meal before leaving. These aren't backdrop details, they're the texture of a specific time and place—1970s China, rationing, job quotas, the countryside assignment system. The logistics director's household having a ledger with huge sums? That single object carries the weight of the entire corrupt system. And Grandma Liu's courtyard, the kitchen where Shen Mingzhu is cooking unaware, the gate that rattles with visitors—it all feels lived-in. The author doesn't describe the walls or the furniture, but I can see it. I can smell the brown sugar water.
Okay so I need to talk about An Ruoyan because THIS WOMAN. She went from being bossed around by Huang Jinxiu to literally threatening to break Shi Meijiao's legs on the cart ride, and I am HERE for it. The way she handles Shi Meijiao on the train and then later with that stick—she doesn't hold back at all. Remember when she told Shi Meijiao "I think I'll just break your legs and tie you to Zhou Shuchen, so you can't bother him every second"? I literally screamed. And the best part is Zhou Shuchen's reaction—he's sitting there feeling guilty because he thinks she's only being fierce because she loves him too much. Meanwhile she's just done with his nonsense. The irony is delicious. Then there's Gu Yizhi. This guy shows up on crutches and immediately An Ruoyan notices he's ruggedly handsome. She blushes the entire way there and he's staring at her too. The author has them both pretending not to notice the mutual attraction which is so painfully cute. When she blurts out "Handsome boys should protect themselves even more!" and runs back to Deng Xiuli—bro I was dying. And Gu Yizhi's ears turn red because he's imagining she was complimenting him. This is the kind of slow burn setup that makes me stay up until 3 AM.
Not as an author, but as a reader, I am writing this review. What can I say? Interesting characters, a good world, logically thinking characters, mind games, and developed smuts later on. Simply, best among the best. Keep writing, and keep entertaining. And here take note power stones, because you deserve it, Lol.
