Faithlessness
Okay, I need to talk about Lu Yunchi because THIS BOY. I swear I have never seen a character written this perfectly tsundere in my entire life. He is SO angry all the time but like... we all know why, right? He's a lonely kid who's been cooped up in his room and suddenly this bright, persistent girl won't leave him alone. And instead of shutting her out, he keeps giving in. Every single time. The braised pork scene destroyed me. He pretends not to notice but he literally divides the meat and sneaks the bigger pieces into HER bowl. That's not a brat, that's a little softie in disguise. And then he tells her the tiger is stupid for saving the rabbit, and she just says 'sometimes, protecting someone important doesn't need a reason.' I literally gasped out loud. And the dynamic with Tingbai? The way he's flustered every time Mu Mian gets close, pretending to be stern but failing so hard... "Li Mu Mian, you really are…" his voice softening with helpless affection. That line hit different. He's fighting something he can't name and he KNOWS it's dangerous. "Do you know how dangerous this is?" he whispers. The subtext is SCREAMING. Also the fact that Mu Mian doesn't even understand why teasing Yunchi brings her so much joy — "maybe it was because his reactions gave her a warmth and happiness she hadn't felt in a long time" — that's the author quietly telling us she's healing, isn't it?
I just want to talk about the setting for a minute because the author is a menace. Every location feels like it has its own personality, its own breath. The city where the story takes place — I can literally smell the streets. There's this one passage describing the market district at dusk, and I'm not exaggerating when I say I could see every detail: the way the lantern light hits the wet cobblestones, the smell of roasted spices mixing with something faintly metallic from the forge quarter, the distant sound of a river that runs through the whole city like a vein. It's not just decoration. The world actively shapes what happens in it. The narrow alleys force confrontations. The open plazas create vulnerability. The weather isn't just mood lighting — it's a character. And the author never over-explains. You learn about the politics and history of this place the way you'd learn about someone: by watching them move through their space. There's a scene in an abandoned greenhouse where the protagonist finds refuge, and the description of overgrown vines swallowing broken glass and rusted iron frames... it's haunting. Beautiful and decaying at the same time. That's the whole book in one image. I haven't stopped thinking about that greenhouse for two days.
Okay I need to talk about the scene where they find the box under the stone slab. I literally had to pause and just sit with it for a bit. Their parents—gone, dead, whatever happened to them—and yet they still thought about their kids. They left early on the day of the earthquake, came back after the kids were asleep, and all the while they were securing something for them. A shop. In the city. The fact that Lin Xiaoman immediately assumed it was their mother's dowry and then they both just broke down crying in each other's arms... that hit different. It's not just about the material value, it's the sheer intentionality of it. Even in chaos, even facing death, they made sure their children would have something. And then there's Lin Xingxing. I knew this friendship was going to be the one that got me and I was not wrong. The cart scene where she just leans her head on Xiaoman's shoulder and cries? That's the kind of moment that stays with you. She's being married off to someone she didn't choose, away from her best friend, and instead of drama or anger, she just... breaks. Quietly. And Xiaoman's reaction—immediately squeezing in next to her, asking who it is, offering to go inspect the Fang family's grain shop with her—that's real friendship. Not performative. Just there. Also can we talk about Grandma Liu? She's basically the aunt nobody asked for but everybody needed. Buying them phones, setting up unlimited data, teaching them scam prevention, getting them a solar panel because she couldn't comprehend a life without electricity. The line where she warns them about going nearsighted like Teacher Lü made me laugh out loud because it's such a specific, caring thing to say. She's not just helping them survive—she's trying to make sure they thrive.
Let's talk about Han Qingmo because this man is something else. On the surface he's the grateful rescued soldier, but the way he handles this entire situation is... calculated? When Yanchu whispered to her Second Uncle that Han Qingmo already agreed to 'repay her with his hand in marriage,' Han Qingmo picked up on it IMMEDIATELY and ran with it. He didn't hesitate. He looked at He Jiashu and said 'As soon as my injuries are a bit better, I will immediately return to my unit to file a marriage report and then take her with me to the military base.' That is not the response of a man who is being forced into something. That is the response of a man who wants this. And then he calls her 'Chuchu' in front of her ENTIRE FAMILY. Yanchu's internal screaming is everything - 'Good lord! Who said people in this era were conservative? He just called me Chuchu right in front of my elders!' Meanwhile he's sitting there with slightly pink ears looking calm as a cucumber. The duality is delicious. And the Yan'en connection? 'We are excellent comrades; we've collaborated many times' said with such a serious tone while Yanchu 'inexplicably didn't believe him.' Something happened between these two men and I NEED to know what.
Let me just sit with this for a moment. Yao Chengcheng makes bubble tea. Bubble tea. And the Prince tells her that if the Emperor knew he was boiling tribute tea with sugar and milk, ten of her heads wouldn't be enough to atone. TEN HEADS. She used two liang of Ninghong tea—only one jin produced annually, and the Prince himself only has two liang. She used it ALL. And her punishment? Three months salary. Sixty taels. Which makes her nearly collapse. The stakes here are absolutely wild. One wrong ingredient choice and she's executed. And yet she keeps going back, keeps making new dishes, keeps interacting with the Prince who is clearly a dangerous man surrounded by spies and investigators. Anying has been digging into her family for three generations. The Prince is watching her every move. And she's just... making desserts. The tension is maintained so well because every scene has this underlying threat. Even the cozy kitchen moments where everyone's sharing bubble tea—the reader knows this woman is one mistake away from death. And the Prince himself? He has headaches constantly, he wears a mask, his face is burned. What's his stake? What's he fighting for? The story keeps pulling you forward because nobody is safe.
