Okay, I need to talk about this dinner scene because it literally made me sit there staring at my screen. Su Banxia and Jiang Guo'an sitting across from each other, both trying to bring up something, and they end up saying the exact same thing at the same time. "You go first..." The awkwardness is SO palpable. It's like the author just reached into my brain and wrote my exact experience of watching a couple who clearly care about each other but have no idea how to actually BE each other. And then Liu Yan shows up with her sweet and sour ribs like she owns the place. Classic move. But the real emotional gut punch isn't even the love triangle stuff — it's Jiang Guo'an's internal monologue. He sees Su Banxia's eyes are brighter now, and he feels this pang of something he can't name. He's happy she's improving, but there's this ache underneath it too, like he's watching someone become a person he doesn't fully know yet. That's the kind of writing that makes you want to shake the characters and yell at them to just TALK to each other. The Political Commissar noticing they haven't even greeted each other and then glaring at Jiang Guo'an? Chef's kiss. He literally thinks it's all Jiang Guo'an's fault. Meanwhile Jiang Guo'an is over there thinking about finding her a job and being all formal and polite about it, which honestly made me want to scream because the man clearly has feelings but expresses them through bureaucratic favors.
I need to talk about how this chapter moves because the pacing is absolutely insane in the best way. We go from Xue Yao having a full-blown existential crisis about his three years of failure — feeling like he's been manipulated by Pei Di, exposing his former subordinates to danger, being 'foolish beyond redemption' — and then BAM, a head with grass on it pops out of a bush and suddenly he's dealing with a teenage girl who stole medicine for him. The tonal whiplash is intentional and it works. One moment he's contemplating murder, the next he's being guilt-tripped by someone who thinks they're being strategic. The chapter starts heavy, gets lighter when Lu Dantao appears, then ramps the tension back UP when the assassins' footsteps approach. That sequence where they hide among the corpses and the enemy is literally one corpse-length away? My heart was pounding. And then after the tension releases, we get this whole scene of them changing clothes and bickering, which gives the reader a breath before the next wave of danger hits. The author knows exactly when to tighten the screw and when to let it loose. Lu Dantao's internal monologue about 'competing for opportunities in male-oriented novels' is such a tonal pivot — one second we're in a life-or-death thriller, the next we're in a meta-commentary comedy. It's chaotic but it keeps me turning pages.
Okay so let me just say — this chapter sequence is quietly brilliant in how it threads the personal and professional together. The dinner at Imperial Cuisine Tower isn't just a fancy meal; it's the narrative fulcrum. On the surface, it's a girls' night out, but underneath, it's where Su Luoyan's next career move lands in her lap via Sun Yuyu's brother. The variety show opportunity — costume designer for a traditional culture program — is a perfect plot device because it ties directly into Su Luoyan's backstory (ANN, her teacher in France) and her deep appreciation for traditional culture. It feels earned, not random. Then you have the Fu Cheng Shen scenes woven in, which serve as both emotional anchor and plot catalyst. He doesn't just support her — he actively enables her ambitions. When he says "Do whatever you wish. No matter what happens, I'll always have your back," that's not just romance; it's a plot promise that she won't fail because she has a safety net. The interview setup at the end is classic tension-building. First formal job interview, nervous energy, the contrast with Fu Cheng Shen who "never had to interview" because he started his own business — that detail alone tells you everything about their dynamic. The chapter ends on a note that makes you want to keep reading. Clean, efficient plotting.

"A Riveting Quest with Memorable Characters""This book has everything legendary artifacts, a dark cult, a demon lord waiting to rise, and a team of heroes with unique strengths and personalities. The interactions between Arjun and his companions are heartwarming and full of chemistry. While some plot twists were predictable, the overall journey was captivating. Definitely worth reading!"

Alright, mandatory five star review from the author to walk you through the book. Now a lot of you might want to walk away after the first few chapters but I'm here to assure you that there's a light at the end of the tunnel. It gets better, I promise. It's going to be fast paced at the beginning, but everything really calms down at the middle, there's going to be a lot of romance (what's a book about a footballer without a few sexual scandals) and it's quite funny (so I've heard
