Let me start with the rain scene — Pei Ji returns to his courtyard drenched, and the contrast between that cold, dark rain and the stifling heat the next morning is deliberate. The author isn't just setting mood, they're using weather as emotional barometer. Rain = the night of confession and severance. Heat = the suffocating confinement Luo Fu endures while waiting for the palace envoys. Then there's this one image that I cannot stop thinking about: Luo Fu dressed for the palace selection, wearing heavy powder and a crimson rose at the center of her high bun. The text says she 'revealed a different kind of beauty—regal and radiant, like a celestial consort.' But reading between the lines, this is a girl being painted like a sacrifice. The maids admire her, the palace attendants stare, and Luo Yuanshan immediately starts calculating how her selection will benefit his career. She looks like a goddess but she's being prepared for a cage. The scene where Cailü enters complaining about the heat and the lack of ice is also worldbuilding genius — it immediately establishes the class divide between the courtyards without any exposition. The eldest miss has ice in all four corners; Luo Fu's courtyard is a steamer. And then Ren Dong splashes water on Cailü's skirt? Chef's kiss. The world feels lived-in, hierarchical, and suffocating all at once.
