The dialogue in this section is genuinely fantastic, and I want to highlight a few moments that made me laugh out loud. Lu Xin: "What gives you the right to act so high and mighty in front of me?" / Zhi Wan: "The Duke's residence isn't yours to command. Want to throw me out? Who do you think you are?" — This exchange is PERFECTION. Zhi Wan doesn't just push back, she dismantles Lu Xin's entire sense of entitlement in two sentences. And Lu Xin's reaction — face turning pale then red, trembling and pointing — is comedy gold. The author writes confrontation like a choreographer. Then there's the dream dialogue, which is a completely different flavor. "How presumptuous!" / "Then don't hold me." / "Are you angry?" / "Yes!" — This is playful, charged, and feels like two people who know each other intimately but are pretending they don't. The man's dry humor ("You can't be that old, can you?") and Zhi Wan's petulant defiance create such a specific dynamic. It's flirty without either of them admitting it. Wei Shi's dialogue is warm and maternal but also revealing. Her complaint about Lu Zhan never coming home, her pride in his position — it's casual family chatter that simultaneously builds her character and hints at the distance between mother and son. And Shuang'er's lines are always brief but weighted. "This servant will also protect you with my life." Three sentences in the whole chapter, but each one hits. The author gives each character a distinct voice, and I never once confused who was speaking.
Okay, I need to just sit with this for a second because the sibling dynamic between Xiao Yu and Xiao Li absolutely wrecked me. The Empress splitting that jade pendant—"when separated, they're only two halves. But when they're put together... they become one perfect circle." That line hit me so hard. It's such a simple image but it carries the entire emotional weight of the story. Two halves, forever searching for each other. And then Xiao Yu finds this little beggar kid who looks at him with those eyes and he just... breaks. "It's my fault. I didn't protect Li'er. From now on, I'll stay by your side every step of the way. I'll protect you." The kid repeats "Really?" and it's basically the same words his sister used to say to him back when they were children. The parallel is devastating. What kills me is that Xiao Yu has been carrying this guilt for years. He thinks it was all his fault. And now he's in Suzhou, hunting for bandits, and somewhere in that stronghold is probably his sister wearing a silver mask, and they're circling each other like strangers. The dramatic irony is making me physically anxious. Also the scene with Cai Ling? The bedridden sister who genuinely cares for the masked girl? "If things become impossible... Run. Don't worry about us." And the girl's response—her voice warm but her eyes "endless coldness." She's protecting people while being completely alone inside. I'm already obsessed. So my question is: when they finally recognize each other through the jade pendants, what happens? Does Xiao Li hate him for not finding her sooner? Does she forgive him? I need to know. I'm not ready for this to end.
The pacing here is absolutely wild and I need to process it. We go from a FULLY FLESHED execution scene—multiple people being beheaded, a ghost tearing apart souls—to Swallow Holding Branch waking up at age three with a fever. That's a massive tonal shift and it works because the exhaustion she feels at the execution ground naturally leads to the deep slumber and rebirth. It's not jarring, it's inevitable. Then the author takes their time with the recovery period—the fever days, the physician visits, the congee being fed to her. This slow, domestic pacing is a deliberate contrast to the violent opening. We're grounded in the everyday before we're thrown back into the political maneuvering of the Longevity Hall visit. The chapter transitions are smooth: Chapter 4 moves from her waking to the family gathering, and Chapter 5 ends with her being carried into the inner chamber to see her grandfather. The tension builds quietly—she's observing everyone, cataloging enemies, noting her mother's pregnancy, realizing she can't speak the truth. The pacing never drags because every scene is doing double duty: advancing plot AND deepening character understanding. By the time we reach the end, I'm already obsessed with what she's going to do next.
The story is interesting, I must admit that. I see that you're trying to portray the MC as a through and through villain who also has his humane side, its intresting read
I'm sure this will develop into a great story given your excellent track record, but I sincerely hope that you can just continue Records of a Dark Magus instead, it's still one of my favorite stories on this site
HBelial is such a refreshing protagonist because he doesn’t always come out on top. It’s rare to see a main character who isn’t unbeatable, and that vulnerability makes his story so much more engaging. His lowkey sinister vibe adds an edge to his character, keeping you on your toes, but what really sells it is his trash talk. It’s witty, cutting, and definitely gives off Spider-Man vibes—it’s the perfect mix of humor and menace. That being said, Cassidy is my personal favorite. He’s got that flare. But let’s be real—the guy gets no bitches, and I feel that on a personal level. Still, he’s an absolute legend, and I’m rooting for him to get the recognition (and maybe the romance) he deserves!
While reading the first chapter, I perceived the MC as a mischievous spoilt brat, but as I read on, I realized he’s actually sensible and mature for his age which is understandable due to his background. The story progresses quickly, and I was caught off guard by the sudden shift from the third-person narrative to first-person narrative in chapter 4, but I guess that works as well. Overall, the story is very good, and would have readers like me invested in it. Good job, author ?
Hello Hello! This is your greedy author! I hope you can enjoy this story! There are many points that can be improved and believe me, I know that! But any constructive criticism, comments and questions, I will always be here to answer your questions! Also, enjoy this work! I do them with great care and I hope you love them as much as I do! Thank you for reading!
It's a very good novel and for a long time I want to see an author that can blend incantation and juju practice into a novel. Although this novel didn't do much justice to the character the world building is the best I have seen on this site.
Creation is hard, cheer me up by ratings comments and recommendations Also don't forget to add to your library for more updates
This novel pulled me in from the first sentence! The eerie, poetic tone mixed with vivid descriptions makes every moment feel immersive. The tension, mystery, and fast-paced action are so well balanced, I couldn't look away. The writing is gripping, and I can't wait to read more. Amazing job! :3
This is better than I initially thought. nice one author. Also, be sure to give the mother enough screen time. You can give it a try. I believe you'll like it.
