Okay, I need to talk about this chapter because holy shit. The entire arc of Wu Junji vs. Emperor Zhou has been building like a pressure cooker and then—BAM—Emperor Zhou slaps him. And not just any slap, one that makes Wu Junji genuinely terrified of going deaf again because of his previous life trauma. The plot here is doing SO MUCH work on multiple levels. On the surface, it's a father-son squabble over a palace. But underneath? Wu Junji is playing a four-move chess game and he just laid out his opening. He went to Emperor Zhou demanding a palace, knew it would fail, knew it would escalate, and the whole point was to make the Emperor furious so that when Wu Junji later 'finds' Chen Yu and 'warns' him about his family's fate, Chen Yu will be suspicious and resentful. One move, four gains. The man is a monster and I love it. The structure of this chapter is also brilliant—starting with Wu Junji's cold calculation about Chen Yu, shifting into the seemingly domestic father-son scene, and then detonating into that slap. The transition from political scheming to emotional violence is jarring in the best way. It reminds you that underneath all the rebirth plots and systems, these are two traumatized people who don't know how to talk to each other.
Okay so let me just say—this chapter is a masterclass in how to drip-feed backstory without it feeling like an info dump. The Amin reveal is staggeringly well-constructed. You start with this vague mention of a 'twin sister' from Maggie, and suddenly the whole case gets this new dimension. Amin wasn't just some nightclub girl who disappeared; she had a whole tragic backstory—abusive father, favoritism, being left behind at twelve, dropping out of school. And then BAM, her twin sister Zhang Huijing shows up as the victim. That connection hit me like a truck. But what really got me is how the plot threads are braiding. Six years ago: Amin quits the nightclub, Liang Wei disappears, Typhoon Signal No. 8 hits, and Zhang Pingxuan vanishes. All these events happening in the same month, and the police are only now connecting them. The skull reconstruction scene with Granny Zhou—this old woman clutching her grandson's photo, pointing at a reconstructed face she barely recognizes—this is the kind of plot moment that makes you put the book down and just stare at the wall. And Shen Zhicheng's revelation about his own sister? That's not just character development; that's the plot using his personal trauma to deepen the mystery. The author is basically saying: this case isn't just about solving a crime, it's about two people whose family histories mirror each other. I'm obsessed with where this is going.
Okay so I need to talk about Su Zhisheng because this guy is something else. Like, he's sitting in an interrogation room watching his own stepmother get grilled, and he's literally smiling, deliberately provoking her. The text says: "Su Zhisheng smiled, deliberately provoking his stepmother." That's not just revenge, that's surgical. He's not flying off the handle or making a scene — he's calm, calculated, and he already knows exactly what he's doing. But here's what really got me: the opening line about the snake. "If this snake had hands to play with them, I'd have dug them up myself and had some fun." This is the same guy who's helping the police recover murder evidence, and his first thought is about a rat snake playing with phones. It's such a weird, specific detail that tells you everything about him. He notices things other people miss. He has this quiet, almost feral empathy for animals that his own family clearly never had for him. And then there's the family dynamics, which are absolutely poisonous. Su Jingye — the father — keeps a photo of his first wife hanging in the living room year-round while simultaneously living a life of debauchery. The text calls him a "superficially devoted scoundrel" and honestly that's the most accurate character description I've read in a long time. He's performative in his grief, performative in his love, everything is an act. Su Mingjie is the opposite — genuinely kind, even tried to persuade the adopted son to come back when he ran away last time. But the family treats his kindness as weakness. The fans even say it: "Such a good person, and this is how he gets repaid." Meanwhile Su Jingye and Su Minghao are in the bathroom doing some weird pomelo leaf bath ritual to "wash away the bad luck" from being investigated, while simultaneously plotting to have Su Zhisheng doxxed by crazy fans. The hierarchy of cruelty in this family is just... wow. Everyone is worse than the person above them, except Su Zhisheng who seems to be the only one with a functioning moral compass. And Hu Xiuchun — she's not just evil, she's pathetic. She's crying in the interrogation room, blaming everyone else, but the text makes it clear she's the one who built this whole operation. She recruited the agents, she found the victims, she was the one who trapped Liu Meiling. She's a small fish who thought she was a shark.
This book captures love, fate, and timing in the most beautiful way. Arjun and Ayesha’s connection is unforgettable, their emotions raw, and their journey through words and silence is mesmerizing.
