I've been thinking about that bar scene nonstop. Let me just say—'in her dazed state, she felt the man was quite handsome. Moreover, he seemed to have a strong sense of responsibility, repeatedly whispering in her ear that he would take responsibility for her and asking her to wait for him. Wait for him to get divorced…' THIS LINE. 'Wait for him to get divorced.' That detail is EVERYTHING. It means this man is already married. Which raises the question: is he Fu Jingyan? Because Fu Jingyan IS married (technically) and he's the one who would be getting a divorce. The timing lines up perfectly. But here's what makes this emotionally devastating: Yu Yue has zero romantic history with anyone in this story. Her 'marriage' was a transaction. She traded her body and her future for her grandmother's kidney. She was discarded. And yet, one night of confused, drug-tinged passion with a stranger makes her say 'that man was really handsome. I want to find him for the sake of the child.' That's not just looks-obsessed—that's a woman who has NEVER been chosen. Who has never been desired. The fact that she's latching onto this memory, this vague impression of kindness and responsibility, shows how starved she is for genuine human connection. She's not just looking for a father for her baby—she's looking for proof that she's worthy of being cared for. And the contrast with Fu Jingyan? Oof. He sent her a divorce agreement and disappeared. He wouldn't even meet her. And this stranger—this man she barely saw, barely knew—told her he'd take responsibility. The emotional irony is almost painful. I also love that Yu Yue's reaction to the pregnancy isn't panic or despair. It's this quiet, determined 'I need to think about it'—and then later, a clear decision to keep the baby and find the father. She's been through hell and she's still standing. That resilience is what makes me root for her so hard.
Okay so this whole divorce cooling-off period setup is honestly genius for building tension. Like, it's literally a one-month deadline hanging over Yu Yue's head, and she's throwing out these provocative questions like "what if I find someone else?" while Fu Jingyan is just sitting there trying to maintain some shred of composure. The plot is doing so much work here—on the surface it's a marital spat, but underneath there's a pregnancy mystery, a mysterious woman from a night neither of them fully discussed, and three years of emotional distance that's about to crack wide open. The most interesting structural choice is how the author refuses to give us straight answers. We don't know who the father is. We don't know what happened that night with the other woman. Fu Jingyan's internal comparison between Yu Yue and that other woman is basically the author winking at us saying "pay attention, this matters." And then Yu Yue's thought about having been a "widow" for three years—boom, that reframes the entire marriage. What looked like a cold divorce drama suddenly has emotional stakes. I'm also intrigued by how the Fu family's status and influence are mentioned as a plot device. With a little maneuvering, the divorce might not even take a full month. So there's a race against time on two levels: can she find the father before the cooling-off period ends, and can Fu Jingyan hold onto whatever's left of this marriage before it's too late? The plot is tightening like a screw, and I genuinely can't wait to see what snaps.
The dialogue in this passage is absolutely phenomenal. Let me just quote a few lines because they perfectly capture each character's voice. Gu Chenguang: 'Genius cultivation speed, bankrupting cultivation costs.' That's literally his personality—everything gets logged and quantified. Murong Zhuo: 'Thirty high-grade spirit stones... converted to low-grade spirit stones, that's three hundred thousand.' Of course he's the one doing the mental math on conversions. Yan Chuan: 'Bankrupt right after striking it rich—in less than three days.' Quick, punchy, exactly how he speaks. And then the elders bringing their gifts—First Elder Wen Zhiya's line 'This is called resource recycling!' after admitting he stole spirit beast dung, and Second Elder Jing Yuan's 'This is called resource redistribution! Qingyun Sect is so wealthy, what's wrong with sharing a bit with us?' These aren't just funny lines, they reveal entire worldviews in one sentence. The narrative voice itself is also doing something really clever—the protagonist's internal monologue has this childlike wonder mixed with surprising depth. When she thinks about Elder Jing Yuan calling the Qingyun Sect master 'girl' and then spirals into the generational age math ('My dad is over three thousand years old, my brother is a hundred and eight, and I'm only three years and three months old'), it's hilarious but also shows she's processing complex social dynamics. The author never lets any character sound like everyone else. Even the silent moments—Gu Chenguang silently pulling out a handkerchief—communicate personality through action rather than dialogue.
Okay, can we talk about how Zhao Xuanzhen is a walking contradiction? He thinks Su Wantang is shallow and stupid, calls her a "simpleton," yet he literally follows her across the city when she sneaks out? The man is so obviously obsessed and he thinks he's being clever about it. "Having nothing better to do" my ass. And then the whole Xu Jinnian situation—Zhao Xuanzhen's reaction when Ping'an tells him Su Wantang is meeting her ex-fiancé? His brow furrows immediately. Not concern. Not curiosity. Pure territorial instinct. He confronts her with this moral high ground about her being "linked like lotus roots" but honestly? He's the one who can't let her go talk to another man. Classic. But here's what actually got me—his internal monologue about his father. He despises his father's promiscuity, which is why he kept his marriage to Su Huajin "dignified and gentle" for years. Yet Su Wantang turns him into someone completely different. That line where he feels a "profound and wicked impulse" pulled out of him? That's not just physical desire—that's a man whose entire identity is cracking. He built himself on self-control and dignity, and this girl who he's been calling stupid is literally climbing on top of him and taking what she wants. The scratch marks on his chest at the end? I love that the narrator makes a point of him noticing them. He's annoyed AND amused. He's losing control and he's enjoying it. What a mess.
