I have to talk about the atmosphere in this book because the author knows how to paint a scene and I am HERE for it. The opening image of the white fog swallowing the city is instantly cinematic. 'The fog outside hadn't completely dissipated, which was why they were all trapped in the company building.' Just one sentence and I'm already feeling claustrophobic. The fog isn't just weather—it's a barrier, a threat, a character in itself. But the scene that absolutely got me was when Wen Lan walks out of the building. Let me just quote this because it's perfect: 'The white fog outside the street obscured everything. Only the distant howls of zombies made it clear that the zombies were nearby. The air was thick with the stench of blood.' Three sentences. Three sensory details. Sight, sound, smell. That's it. No exposition about the apocalypse, no backstory dump—just a woman walking into hostile territory with nothing but her wits and a secret power. I could literally feel the damp fog on my skin and smell that coppery blood smell. The supermarket scene is another highlight. Food scattered on the floor, some stained with blood. Wen Lan grabbing chocolate because she's starving and pregnant. The contrast between the mundane act of shopping and the horrific reality of the setting is so effective. It's not a glamorous apocalypse—there's no pristine survivor compound, no utopian bunker. It's dirty, it's dangerous, it's real. And the energy pearls—glowing faintly inside zombie corpses, one in the chest, one in the brain. That visual of Wen Lan cutting open a zombie to retrieve a marble-like orb is equal parts disgusting and fascinating. The author balances horror and wonder in a way that keeps the world feeling alive and unpredictable. The rescue team's arrival on a motorcycle with zombies chasing them is pure action cinema. Engine roaring, weaving through streets, the clean cuts on zombie heads showing Wen Che's skill. Every scene has this visceral quality that makes the world feel tangible.
Okay so this whole viral moment is genuinely brilliant plotting. Lin Yi just wanted to livestream mutant beast hunting for influence, right? Simple goal. But then some fan clips his stream and BOOM — trending #32. The way the author structures this is so smart because it mirrors exactly how fame actually works in real life. You don't control it. It just happens to you. What I loved most was the contrast between Lin Yi's reaction and Lu Jinghan's. Lin Yi is completely thrown — his wristband literally crashes from too many notifications, which is such a perfect metaphor for being overwhelmed by sudden attention. He's a former researcher who kept a low profile, and now he's dealing with a thousand likes and comments about being a "super handsome guy." The humor in that is chef's kiss. But then Lu Jinghan steps in and the whole dynamic shifts. He doesn't just give Lin Yi a script to follow — he makes him think about WHY he's doing this. "What do you hope to gain from this popularity?" That question is the pivot point of the entire arc. And Lin Yi's answer — "I'm not leaving Blue Star" — is such a powerful character moment that also drives the plot forward. It's not just about fame; it's about where he belongs. The cooking stream twist at the end was also a great narrative choice. Everyone expects more mutant beast hunting, and instead he's making crème caramel. It subverts expectations and shows Lin Yi is someone who can't be boxed into one category. That's good storytelling — giving the audience what they want while also surprising them. I also appreciated the Du Hong subplot. The bet about the wheat germination is a ticking clock that's going to pay off later. It's a small thing but it adds texture to the world and shows Lin Yi isn't just some lone wolf — he's building relationships and community. The plot feels layered, not one-note. It's a survival story that's also about influence, choice, and what kind of person you want to be when the world suddenly starts watching you.
Okay, I need to talk about this opening because WOW. The author just drops the reader into a scene where an imperial decree is being read and within minutes everything explodes. Let me just say: the pacing here is absolutely ruthless and I love it. You've got the decree announcing Xiao Rang's promotion, then the plot twist that he used his military merit to request an Equal Wife, then Cui Anru discovering Lin Zhiyin is pregnant—all of this happens before I even finished Chapter 1. That's not just efficient storytelling, that's aggressive storytelling. What really stands out to me is how the plot uses the imperial decree itself as a narrative device. It's not just exposition—it's the inciting incident that forces every character to reveal their true colors. The Old Madame's line, 'I'd like to see if she dares!' when Cui Anru announces her divorce, tells you everything about where the family stands. And then Cui Anru's response—walking out and going straight to the palace—is such a bold plot move. She's not going to fight them in their own house; she's going to take it to the highest authority possible. The subplot of the woman coughing up blood on the street is interesting too. It mirrors Cui Anru's own situation in a way—the abandoned wife and child, the man who earned merit and chose someone else. 'He said he had earned merit and wanted to marry his childhood sweetheart.' That little detail from the street scene is basically a microcosm of the entire plot. It's like the universe is showing Cui Anru she's not the only one suffering from male betrayal. But here's what I'm wondering: the Emperor hasn't shown his hand yet. Cui Anru herself says 'We may not have justice on our side, but we have guilt.' Guilt—meaning the Emperor will feel politically obligated. That's a smart protagonist who understands power dynamics. But what does the Emperor actually want? And what role will that mysterious man from the other carriage play? I need to know what happens next.
