Abyss
Okay so let me just say—this part where the Lin family's house gets completely emptied is either the most satisfying revenge in the book or the most terrifying supernatural event, and I can't decide which. On one hand, Lin Kexin is clearly behind it. She's smug about it. She even says "picturing the Lin family's misery made Lin Kexin work even faster." But on the other hand, the way the narrative plays it—with Lin Jianguo stumbling into an empty house, the neighbors whispering about ghosts, the police baffled—it reads like a haunting. The retired teacher literally suggests reporting to the Public Security Bureau, and the officers themselves think about spirits before shaking it off. That ambiguity is genius. Is this justice or is it something darker? And then there's the black market subplot that just drops in like a bomb. One chapter she's cutting pig grass, the next she's moving ten thousand jin of wheat through underground channels with a man called Brother Long who clearly runs a serious operation. The plot keeps pivoting and I'm just sitting here like—wait, what? How did we get from village labor to organized crime so fast? But it works. It actually works.
"When the Biggest Enemy of a Story Is Its Own Author"Reading this novel was a frustrating experience, not so much because of the story itself, but because of the author's attitude. The plot has potential, but the execution leaves much to be desired. Not because there's a lack of information, but because what is given is disorganized and poorly presented. A story should allow readers to understand its world without the author having to step into the comments section to provide impromptu explanations.I tried to express a legitimate doubt about the worldbuilding—because yes, if a random bandit has the same cultivation level as the protagonist, it's reasonable to question how strong his family really is—and instead of a clear response, I received a series of defensive, condescending, and completely unnecessary replies. The author seems to assume that if something was mentioned in a previous chapter, then any question about it is automatically invalid. As if it's the reader's fault for not memorizing every scattered detail across different chapters. But the most striking issue is the author's stance on criticism. Instead of taking the time to improve the storytelling or even acknowledging that perhaps the exposition isn't the best, they respond with an attitude that oscillates between disdain and outright denial of any possible flaw in their work. To them, if you didn’t understand something, it’s your problem. If something doesn’t make sense, it’s because "you're not thinking logically." And if you dare to ask, you might as well stop reading. It's a shame because there are interesting ideas here, but the author seems more interested in arguing with readers than in making the story more accessible. A novel should be able to stand on its own without needing the author to drop into the comments, giving explanations as if they were footnotes. If you enjoy stories where every legitimate question is met with passive-aggressive responses and the narrative demands infinite patience to connect dots the author couldn’t be bothered to structure properly, go ahead. But if you're looking for a story that explains itself without needing clarifications, you’re better off elsewhere.
The novel is good and fun to read, definitely worth checking out. I admit and I am still very interested in it.
A nostalgic yet tragic start! The story hooks you with Thomas's peaceful retirement, only to flip the tone with an unexpected twist. The emotional buildup makes you feel his faded glory, and the mysterious white room leaves you craving answers. Can't wait to see where this goes!
What's with the mc looking back in these synopsis? lol... Has it even become a troupe to add looking back into your synopsis, or did a famous book did it once so it kinda stuck?edit: posted this four days ago but it was banished to the shadow realm for some reason...
I'm already on Chapter 10, lol. Reading it for the second time is amazing. I'm getting to understand the story more now.
Keep up, love the update stability, is unique.
If I'm being honest, this book has potential. and I love how the author introduced the mc, his past and his ambition. It's worth reading. ❤
A great start to a fantasy story. it is clear the author puts a lot of effort in world building and the writing is good. the novel can be improved with more conversations and interactions between characters than descriptions. Good luck on the new book.
