This is a guy who's watched his people suffer for over two hundred years, who's seen them mocked at biennial gatherings, who's had to pay protection fees to stronger tribes just to keep his people alive. And then this tiny kitten shows up with magic knowledge and suddenly everything changes. The father-son dynamic between Lu Qizhou and Ah Li is also everything. Ah Li's conditioned reflex—'if Zhou Zhou says it's delicious, it IS delicious'—is so sweet and also kind of funny. He's this huge, strong warrior who treats the little kitten's opinion like gospel. And when Zhou Zhou says the matsutake would be delicious stewed with pheasant, the warriors immediately remember and go hunt pheasants specifically. That's devotion, that's love, that's a found family built on trust. But there's also this undercurrent of sadness. Lu Qizhou is living in constant fear of his parents 'sparking a fight' because they're so enthusiastic about their nightly activities. He covers his ears and buries his head in his stomach. It's played for laughs but also kind of heartbreaking—he's a child who just wants some peace and privacy in his own home. And he turns off the livestream at night out of respect for their privacy, which shows how thoughtful he is despite his young appearance. The chief and priest's conversation about passing the priesthood to Zhou Zhou had me feeling complicated emotions. The priest is being strategic, yes, but he also genuinely loves this tribe and wants to secure their future. His line 'if Zhou Zhou hadn't come of age yet, I would have handed the position to him directly'—that's desperation masked as wisdom, and it's beautifully written.
I need to talk about Zhao Zhen's internal monologue because holy shit the voice here is immaculate. "You can run for a while, but can you run forever? You can hide from him, but can you hide from Consort Miao? When the time comes, he would have Consort Miao hold down this little troublemaker, pull down his pants, and give him a good spanking!" This is an EMPEROR. He's literally thinking about physically disciplining his six-year-old son while also trying to manage an empire. The tonal whiplash is incredible. One paragraph he's doing full dad-mode threat, the next he's genuinely asking his son for strategic advice about the Liao and Xia situations. And the funniest part? He's fully aware his son is manipulating him through cuteness and snacks, and he's letting it happen because the kid actually has good points. The dialogue between father and son is basically a wrestling match where both competitors are pretending they're not wrestling. Zhao Xin says things like "I'm still young" and "military affairs are matters of state, involving life and death" while clearly stalling for time. Zhao Zhen sees right through it but plays along anyway. Their conversation about finding Imperial Study Companions—"Two descendants of civil officials, two descendants of military generals, plus two sons of Imperial Consort Kin and two sons of the imperial clan"—reads like a kid ordering from a menu except the menu is literally the entire political structure of the Song Dynasty. And Zhang Maoze's perspective? Pure gold. The narrator keeps cutting to him wishing he could "embed his eyeballs into the cracks of the floor tiles." This man has seen too much and wants out of his job so bad.
