The sensory writing in this passage is absolutely phenomenal. Let me just start with the rain scene — it's not just weather, it's a plot device that forces proximity. "Summer rain always arrived swiftly and unexpectedly." One minute Shen Jiaojiao is refusing to get in the car, the next she's trapped in an enclosed space with Wen Shanyi and her clothes are damp against her skin. The author uses the weather to strip away her defenses literally and figuratively. And the scents! The sandalwood in the car, the sweet fragrance that replaces it, Wen Shanyi's sensitivity to smells — these details make the scene feel so physical and immediate. "His nostrils twitched slightly. So fragrant." I could literally smell that car interior. The way the author builds atmosphere through smell rather than just visual description is sophisticated storytelling. The elevator scene is a masterclass in confined-space tension. Seven or eight people crowding in, the noise, the wedding banquet — it's chaotic and noisy, which makes the moment when Wen Shanyi blocks out everything except Shen Jiaojiao even more powerful. The contrast between the external chaos and internal focus is gorgeous. And those random elevator passengers commenting on how good-looking they are as a couple? "If these two ever have kids, imagine how good-looking they'd be" — the author really let the background characters do the shipping for us and I am HERE for it. The Shen family hotel being high-end but suddenly hosting wedding banquets because "the recent situation really wasn't good" is a nice touch of worldbuilding — we get economic context without an info dump.
Okay so let me just say — the way this chapter unfolds is genuinely clever. On the surface, it looks like a straightforward dowry arrival scene. Lin Pingzhi shows up with thirty-six nanmu chests, everyone's impressed, the Emperor eats an extra bowl of rice. But then Fu Lingxi starts connecting dots and suddenly the whole thing smells off. The Emperor granting DOUBLE dowries to four consorts? Sending a personal maid from the clan? It seems like an enormous favor, right? Wrong. Fu Lingxi's internal monologue hits me like a truck: [Is the Emperor of Shangyi Kingdom actually a broke loser?] That's the kind of line that makes you stop and go — wait, what? And then the explanation drops: the two princesses fell into a lake, the Emperor felt pity for the consorts as fathers, and suddenly this "generous" policy makes perfect sense. It's not generosity. It's damage control from a guy who's clearly running on empty. The plot twist here isn't some big revelation, it's the slow dawning realization that the Emperor's grace is actually a symptom of his weakness. And Fu Lingxi? She sees right through it. That moment when she goes from "wow my mother really loves me" to "something is deeply wrong here" is masterful storytelling. The author doesn't tell us the Emperor is broke — we figure it out alongside her. That's how you do it.
Okay, can we just talk about how Su Nian literally freezes mid-task the SECOND she senses someone approaching? Like, she's been working nonstop all afternoon—waist aching, fingers cut, nails full of mud—and the moment she hears footsteps, she doesn't hesitate. She quietly tells Xingxing to hide and not make a sound. That's it. No panic, no drama, just pure instinct. This woman has been through hell and back, and her first concern isn't even her own safety—it's keeping that kid safe. I love her so much already. And the way she handles the strangers at the gate is so revealing. She doesn't open the door. Doesn't answer. Just watches from behind the blackout curtain, machete in hand. The man knocking is polite—"We're not bad people"—but Su Nian isn't fooled. She's seen enough to know that polite doesn't mean safe. And that guy? The one examining the wall? He's not just looking for shelter. He's assessing. I don't trust him one bit. What really got me though is the contrast between how she treats Xingxing versus these strangers. With Xingxing, there's this fierce, almost maternal tenderness. She checks on him after all that labor. With the strangers, she's cold, calculating, ready to fight. It tells you everything about what she values and what she's willing to risk. Who is Xingxing to her? The text doesn't say outright, but the way she protects him makes it clear—he's her whole world now. And I'm dying to know more about their backstory. What happened to her family? Why is she alone with this kid in a post-apocalyptic setting? The silence around Xingxing's presence is so loud to me.

This book is great. It is a most read for all great novel readers
Promising start by the author. Descriptions are so vivid they allow you to picture what's happening every step of the way. I did get confused by the formatting of speech but i got used to it as I continued to read. The world building could be setting up the story for something bigger, but that could be just my speculation. Still, it's promising The mc is uhh...I don't know how to describe her, I haven't encountered such a character before so it's hard for me to draw up a description that would do her justice Overall it's a pretty good read, granted you are into fast pace books
ok, I'm 20 chapters in, and is a very damn funny story. It 's bit weird how the character changes si fast from the guy that makes his coworkers smile, to the plotting guy...but I'm enjoying enough to overlook it.it isn't like tye character are super deep, they are not, but again, they are funny and easy to read about. Its'sthe best novel you will ever read? not by a far shot Am i thinking how to get enough FP toread the 200+ chapters written? you bet i am
