Okay, let's talk about stakes because this confrontation scene is where everything comes to a head. Chen Anguo shows up, tries to morally blackmail Jin Yao's family into giving him free food, and the entire family unit immediately shifts from vulnerable sellers to an impenetrable fortress. The stakes here are so much bigger than just a few youtiao. On the surface, it's about money—five cents for a fried dough stick, four cents for a corn bun. But really, it's about dignity. It's about whether this family will be bullied into submission or whether they'll stand their ground. And Wei Shufen's response makes it clear: they are NOT backing down. "You should be ashamed! I'm embarrassed to even listen to you, hmph!" This isn't just a mom defending her children—this is a woman who has survived three generations of poverty and she's not about to let some educated youth with a thick face ruin her morning. The emotional stakes are enormous because we've seen how scared the family was before this moment. Jin Miao's internal panic about whether they can even do business like this? That fear is real. And then watching Wei Shufen obliterate that fear with pure, unfiltered rage? That's catharsis. The tension doesn't drop after Chen Anguo leaves either. The author keeps the momentum going by immediately pivoting to the town scene, where the business is thriving. It's a perfect contrast—after the conflict, the reward. The family isn't just surviving; they're succeeding. And that makes the stakes feel even higher because now there's something real to lose.
Let me tell you, the stakes in this story are deceptively high. On the surface, it's about a broken engagement and some money. But underneath? It's about a woman who spent her entire first life being exploited, abused, and discarded—and now she's drawing a line that she will not cross. The Lu family's refusal to return the dowry isn't just greed; it's about power. Li Guifen spent years convincing herself that Lin Ruochu was an unworthy daughter-in-law, and returning the money would mean admitting she was wrong. That five hundred yuan represents the Lin family's entire savings, exhausted to give their daughter a decent start. The Lu family took it and never intended to give it back. What makes the conflict so tense is that everyone knows the truth but is performing differently. Lu Xianggui knows his son is at fault but can't admit it publicly. Lu Yichen genuinely believes Lin Ruochu is just throwing a tantrum. Xia Lin is playing the victim while having orchestrated the whole mess. And Lin Ruochu? She's done performing. She's not here to negotiate anymore. The moment Lin Zhiyuan throws that punch at Lu Yichen is the breaking point—the family's protective instinct finally overriding years of awkward dynamics. And Lin Ruochu shielding him instead of Lu Yichen? That's the story's central conflict crystallized in a single gesture. She's not just ending an engagement; she's rewriting every relationship in her life.

I’m already on Chapter 5, and I wanted to leave a review! This is my first time reading a story about cultivation with a Chinese theme/characters, and I’m really enjoying it so far.The pacing of each chapter is great, and the character/world-building is well done and interesting. I just have a bit of trouble understanding some of the details about the power system. Hehehe, maybe I’m just a bit slow, sorry! :VSo if you’re planning to read this story, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it! If you’re into cultivation and transmigration stories, you must give this one a try!

usually, I start reading when a book has more chapters but the synopsis seemed interesting. I gotta say I regret reading this book while it was still early because it just left me wanting and waiting for more chapters. It is honestly a really good book with an amazing world and setting, plus some riveting action to boot. I only have one nitpick, and it's the use of cuse alternatives. It's not even a real critique, but I personally prefer if a character would curse, seldom curse, or not curse at all. However, not once does the curse alternatives take me out of the story too much so I'm fine either way.
