DemiurgeOhara
Pei Hechuan. Oh my god, Pei Hechuan. The man stood at her grave in full military uniform, rigid as a statue, clutching a photograph, eyes bloodshot and red. He buried her. He saw the charred body. He dug the grave himself. And five years later, a woman who looks exactly like her is riding a bicycle through Shanghai with his possible son on the back. The emotional whiplash in Chapter 2 is unreal. When he grabs her arm and says 'Is it really you?' his voice is hoarse with fear—not just hope, but fear that this is a dream. That's the kind of detail that tells you this man has been broken open and glued back together wrong. And Zhao Yunsheng? She's running. Not because she doesn't care, but because she does. She has two years of history with him, feelings that are still there, and she's actively denying him. 'Comrade, I think you've got the wrong person.' The guilt on her face when she says that—it's palpable. She's lying to the man who loved her enough to stand at her grave for hours. But here's what gets me: Yuanbao. This kid is five years old and he already knows his mom is anxious. 'Mom, do you know that uncle?' He's observant. He's protective. He kicked Pei Hechuan's leg and called him a bad guy. The author didn't need to write a single line of internal monologue for this child to establish that he loves his mother fiercely. The relationship between these three—Pei Hechuan, Zhao Yunsheng, and Yuanbao—is a triangle of grief, guilt, and something that might be love, and it's just getting started.
Okay, so the plot structure here is genuinely clever. You've got two parallel threads converging, and I love how the author sets it up. On one side, Emperor Xiao Yun is dealing with court politics—elevating Hanmen scholars to counter the Shijia clans—and Xie Caiqing's sudden appearance in the capital becomes a pawn in that game. On the other side, Jiang Huaichu has been secretly infiltrating Daning, disguising himself, planning to take the imperial examination just to get close to Xiao Yun. These two threads are about to collide, and the tension is delicious. The three-year gap is doing a lot of narrative heavy lifting here. Xiao Yun remembers that refusal memorial vividly—even teasing Xie Zhe about it—but we don't fully understand the weight of it until we see Jiang Huaichu's perspective. The author withholds just enough information to keep you guessing. Is Jiang Huaichu here for revenge? For power? For something else? The teahouse scene where he publicly defends the Nanyue emperor while Xiao Yun watches from above—that's a masterclass in dramatic irony. We know who he is (sort of), but Xiao Yun doesn't yet, and the reader is sitting there going "oh my god, just look up." The subplot about the examination corruption—candidates bribing officials through the Consort Dowager's brothel—isn't just worldbuilding flavor. It raises the stakes for Jiang Huaichu's plan. He can't just rely on talent; he has to navigate a system stacked against Hanmen candidates. And the fact that he offended Xiao Yun three years ago? That's a ticking bomb. I'm genuinely curious how the author resolves this—will Xiao Yun recognize him? Will he forgive him? Will he punish him? The plot is setting up a collision course and I am HERE for it.

This is a honest review author. This book is a promising blend of both science and fiction. It is well detailed and not draggy. In fact, this book has tension. I like Elias already and as the MC he's already captured the hearts of the audience. Cheers.
I'm here to support! All the way! Everyone should read this novel as well!
