I'm still not over the scene where Ji Jinyu hugs her mother. Like, I read it and just had to put the book down for a second. Here's this woman who has survived floods, plagues, betrayal, and death in her previous life — who has been calling the shots, making plans, wielding a blade in the courtyard at dawn — and then her mother touches her forehead to check if she still has a fever, and Ji Jinyu just breaks. She buries her face in Wang Sijin's arms and cries. The line 'She truly never imagined that in this life, she would have the chance to nestle in her mother's arms again and be a child once more' — that's the kind of sentence that makes you feel the weight of everything she lost and everything she's fighting for. And it's not just the mother-daughter relationship. The grandmother-granddaughters moment is equally powerful. Ji Jinyu scooping up her two little granddaughters, her stern demeanor fading into gentleness, and Ji Nian'an patting her grandmother's hand like a little adult saying 'Grandma, don't be sad. Mother and I are both here with you.' I'm not crying, you're crying. The emotional arc here is about reclaiming what was lost. In her previous life, she lost her parents, her grandchildren, her family. This time, she's not just preventing disaster — she's rebuilding something. Every act of care, every moment of warmth, is a rebellion against the fate she experienced before. The romance subplot isn't really present in these chapters, but the family bonds are so richly drawn that I don't need it. The emotional payoff comes from seeing Ji Jinyu surrounded by people who love her and who she loves back, all of them preparing to face the unknown together. What strikes me most is how the author balances grief and hope. Ji Jinyu remembers the screams of people being burned alive in mass graves, and she covers her ears because the memory is so visceral. But she doesn't collapse into despair. She channels that trauma into action. That's the emotional core of this story — it's not just about survival, it's about refusing to let the past define the future.
The stakes in this story are layered in the best way possible, and the author never lets you forget what everyone stands to lose. On the surface, there's the wedding-day confrontation: Jiang Yunxi shows up and if Zhan Beiyuan doesn't acknowledge the children, he'll be known as a scumbag across the capital. But she's also playing a dangerous game with HIM specifically. If he remembers that night six years ago, he might realize she took advantage of him while he was unconscious. She literally says: 'If he remembered that night six years ago, he would definitely deal with her!' The threat is real and immediate. Then there's the political stakes. The Retired Emperor is gravely ill, and Jiang Yunxi detects that someone is actively trying to harm him—pasting a Fu talisman in the southeast direction to poison his health. This isn't just family drama anymore; it's court intrigue with life-and-death consequences. The children are now in the center of a power struggle they didn't ask for. And underneath everything is Jiang Yunxi's personal countdown. She has 'a little over three months left to live.' Every interaction she has, every alliance she builds, is happening against this ticking clock. She's securing her children's future while her own time runs out. That's a stake no one can take away from her—her mortality. Zhan Beiyuan's conflict is equally compelling. He doesn't remember that night. He's suspicious of Jiang Yunxi's motives. He's being pressured by his father to marry and produce an heir. And now he has children he needs to investigate, a wedding he didn't want, and possibly a conspirator in his father's illness. The man is surrounded by threats from every direction. "I will take responsibility for the children, but I will not marry her" — this line from Zhan Beiyuan shows how he's trying to maintain control in a situation that's spiraling beyond his grasp. But can he really keep them separate? The children and the mother are now inextricably linked in his life. "Retired Emperor, someone is trying to harm you" — and just like that, the personal becomes political, the family drama becomes a matter of life and death for the entire kingdom. The stakes just escalated and I am NOT READY.
The worldbuilding in this novel is so vivid and atmospheric. Let me just start with the opening scene—the Princess Huayang's estate, with its waterside pavilions and galleries. The author paints this picture of oppressive luxury, where the air itself feels suffocating under the Princess's command. And the scorching sun! The contrast between the hot green bricks burning Xue Ning's knees and the cold poison spreading through her veins? That's sensory writing at its finest. Then there's Jingdu itself—the bustling city streets, the horse galloping recklessly, the shop where Xue Mingzhu is browsing trinkets. The author gives us this full picture of a capital city with carved beams and painted rafters, noble daughters whispering at banquets, stables outside estates. It feels alive and real. But what really stands out is how the settings reflect the emotional states. The Princess's estate is all oppressive grandeur. The street scene where Feng Xian saves Xue Ning is chaotic and dangerous—a horse about to trample them, blood spraying from the rider's neck. And then there's Xue Zhai, the family mansion, where the gatekeeper asks where the fifth young lady is, as if she's invisible. The visual imagery is consistently strong. Feng Xian in black robes, his pale wrists, the zither string wrapped around his hand with blood dripping from it—that's a scene that feels like a movie frame. I can literally see it. The author knows how to use setting and description to create atmosphere without over-explaining.
If you're searching for a novel with an overpowered main character (MC) who starts off understated but gradually reveals their immense strength, all while driven by a burning desire for revenge, this is the perfect story for you. The narrative begins with the MC seemingly ordinary, but as the plot unfolds, you'll witness the unveiling of their extraordinary abilities. The writing is masterful, with intricate world-building that immerses you in a richly crafted universe. The MC's journey is fueled by the loss of their family, making their quest for vengeance both emotional and compelling. This tale combines intense action, deep character development, and a gripping storyline that will keep you hooked until the very end.
discovered the webtoon adaptation and absolutely fell in love with the story. the mc is so funny and unique, and the system is super OP, haha. even better are the many events and people he meets, making it all feel like a truly vast world. the number of connections he's forging and the speed at which his career is going is so good to see! 10/10 would recommend reading this and the webtoon. though the recent chapters apparenetly ended at novel chapter 103.. so i suppose i can only show my support here through a review and will look for later parts elsewhere. do very much recommend reading it though! if more chapters were on here i'd be spending coins like crazy haha
