Lyra walks up the stairs to the next floor and goes to one of the four rooms. She enters a room that looks like a study to retrieve a book, a letter, and a necklace with a stone. Afterwards, she leaves the room and walks back down the stairs.
I need to talk about Lin Yulong because honestly my heart was in my throat the entire time. The kid is twelve years old and he literally throws himself between his abusive grandmother and his sister with his arms spread wide like a little angel trying to stop a hurricane. And Lin Wan? She stops the club less than an inch from his back. Can you imagine? The wind from that swing was probably rustling his clothes and she was holding back pure lethal force because of this one kid standing there shaking. What kills me is that Yulong is literally defending the people who torture him. Old Madam Lin and Zhang Shi abused him — made him carry water under the blazing sun, threw him on a pile of firewood when he had a fever — and he still sees them as family worth protecting. Lin Wan's line about him being shackled by filial piety hit so hard. She's right, of course. That's the whole tragedy of it. He's kind, he's good, and that kindness is exactly what's keeping him trapped. But then Lin Wan does something incredible. She doesn't just beat the bad guys and walk away. She looks at Yulong and says, 'When someone points a knife at you, backing down isn't kindness. It's stupidity.' And then she offers him her hand. That's the emotional core of the entire scene — it's not about violence, it's about teaching this boy that his life matters, that he deserves to survive. 'When you're facing wolves, your kindness only becomes the sharp fangs they use to tear you apart.' I literally had to pause and stare at my screen for a minute. And the way she switches from murderous demon back to gentle sister when Yulong asks if she's okay? That contrast is everything. She's protecting him not just from physical harm but from the poisoned values they've been feeding him. Who else in this story would do that? I'm not sure I've ever read a sibling relationship this quietly devastating.
