Okay, I need to talk about how this whole tofu arc is basically the plot engine for everything that follows, and honestly? It's brilliant storytelling disguised as a cooking tutorial. Meng Wan goes from being this vague relative who showed up to actually becoming the breadwinner of the household, and the way the author structures this is so satisfying. First, the experiment phase—making that first batch of soy milk and tofu at home. Then the market phase, where they actually put it out there. Then the aftermath, where Song Tingzhou comes back to find the whole village buzzing about their business. It's a complete narrative arc in just these chapters. What really got me was the subplot with the other tofu seller. Remember when Meng Wan casually drops that he learned from his family and that his brother is a scholar? The woman's entire demeanor shifts from hostile to genuinely friendly. That's not just a side detail—that's a power move embedded in dialogue. The author is showing us that in this world, knowledge and status are currency, and Meng Wan just flexed both without even trying. Then there's Song Tingzhou's return. The author sets this up so perfectly—we see the villagers gossiping, the Second Uncle getting drunk and friendly, Chang Jinhua so busy she doesn't even properly acknowledge her nephew. And then the chapter just ends with Song Tingzhou watching all this, his eyes full of complex emotions. What is he feeling? Betrayal? Confusion? Realization that the woman who raised him cautiously is now thriving without him? I need to know what happens next.
The opening of this chapter is just *chef's kiss* atmospheric. Let me set the scene for you: Xue Yao leaning against a tree, looking up at a star-filled sky he hasn't seen in three years. Three years. More than a thousand days and nights of who knows what. And the wind is carrying the stench of corpses scattered across the ground. The contrast between that endless beautiful galaxy above and the rot below? I literally got chills. And then Lu Dantao shows up through the bushes with grass in her hair like some kind of woodland creature. The image of her tumbling out of the bushes, startling at a corpse, patting her chest and muttering 'that scared me to death' — it's so vivid I could see it as a film scene. The way the author moves between these two perspectives under the same sky is just gorgeous. But the real worldbuilding win is how the forest itself becomes a character. The mist-shrouded trees, the impossible-to-navigate directions, the assassins' footsteps drawing closer while our heroes hide in plain sight among the bodies. Lu Dantao using the Big Dipper to find south — that moment where she looks up and sees a completely different starfield from what she'd see in a modern city? That's the kind of detail that makes you feel like you're actually IN this world. The author doesn't just describe the setting, they make you feel the damp forest air and the weight of being hunted. Also the night-traveling clothes scene — the overwhelming stench of sweat that nearly makes Lu Dantao pass out? That's the kind of sensory detail that grounds the whole thing in reality. This isn't some polished fantasy palace, this is mud and blood and stolen clothes and survival.
I need to talk about Zhuge Liang because this chapter absolutely made me fall harder for him. The man is EVERYWHERE — on the city wall, reading situations, commanding troops, and he does it all with this quiet dignity that contrasts perfectly with the chaos around him. The moment that got me was when Zhuge Liang says 'Let's deal with our current predicament first. Tomorrow, I'll take command. As a newcomer, I should also demonstrate my abilities.' This is the guy who just watched his brother and his wife — wait, HIS WIFE? — both declare they'll follow Jia Xu instead of him, and his response is to step up and take responsibility. That's not just maturity, that's a specific kind of strength. And Jia Xu's reaction to all this? He just watches Zhuge Liang from below and thinks 'Am I not giving the military advisor enough sense of security?' The man is so oblivious to the emotional weight he's creating for everyone around him. Meanwhile Zhang Xiu is over there muttering about how 'our' city sounds like Jia Xu finally considers him part of the team. These tiny character moments are everything. Huang Yueying is another whole vibe. She doesn't even glance at Zhuge Liang when she declares her loyalty to Jia Xu. 'A partner is easy to find, but a master is rare!' This woman has her priorities straight and I respect it. She sees Jia Xu's knowledge — the physics, the chemistry, the things no one else in this era has ever encountered — and she recognizes a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Zhuge Liang and Jia Xu dynamic is my favorite thing in this book. Zhuge Liang is the responsible older brother figure who holds everything together, and Jia Xu is the chaotic genius who keeps throwing curveballs. They complement each other perfectly, even when Jia Xu has no idea what he's doing emotionally.
A solid novel with well-crafted descriptions and a good sense of realism. The attention to detail adds depth to the scenes, making them engaging. Keep up the good work, though there is still room for improvement

I'm not into the genre since I prefer action and drama but I gave it a chance and somehow it was a pretty decent read, the betrayal plot was nicely done and the MC motivation is somewhat realistically ( albeit a bit strange IMO) not enough to break my immension
