The worldbuilding in this novel is genuinely genius and I am shook. Let me just say it: there is a zombie delivery service called Pompadour Delivery. Blue-clad zombies who line up neatly, follow orders, and carry away corpses like it's a normal Tuesday. Wen Chi contacts them to clean up the bodies after the fight, and they just... do it. This is the kind of detail that makes the apocalypse feel REAL. It's not just 'zombies are everywhere, run.' It's 'zombies are everywhere, and somehow society has adapted around them.' The apartment itself feels like a character—Room 414, the kitchen, the sofa where Wen Chi watches dramas, the separate shelf where Jiang Jiming locks away the snacks she gave him. That detail about him taking out a LOCK for her gifts? That's worldbuilding through behavior, not exposition. And the fight scene in the dark apartment—no lights, just Jiang Jiming standing at the doorway like a horror movie villain while Xu Gang's vine ability shoots out and gets countered instantly. The blood on his face, the way he 'seemed as if he belonged in such an environment by nature'—chills. Absolute chills.
The dialogue in this chapter is sharp enough to cut, and the narrative voice has this wonderful dry humor that never feels forced. Let me just highlight one line: Aunt Zhou San watching Cheng Ning weave and muttering, 'You really are something. Weaving a mat like a landlord's daughter doing embroidery. At this rate, you'll only finish half a foot in a day — might as well make a hair ribbon instead!' And Cheng Ning's internal response: 'A hair ribbon? You think you can make a hair ribbon out of a mat?' That exchange is perfect. The village woman's insult is rooted in genuine observation (Cheng Ning IS slow), but it's delivered with such rustic bluntness that it's almost affectionate. And Cheng Ning's deadpan internal rebuttal shows she has the wit to match without needing to say it out loud. Liao Sheng's dialogue is equally distinctive. His panicked 'Wouldn't dare!' when asked about Cheng Ning being his sweetheart — the physicality of that response ('quickly raised his hand to stop the idea') tells us everything about his feelings without a single confession. And then his abrupt cutoff when he almost says 'Dongyuan's sister' — the author uses dialogue fragmentation to convey unspoken tension. The village women's dialogue has a rhythmic quality that feels authentic. Aunt Qian's nosy questions, Aunt Zhou San's running commentary, Aunt Luo's practical concern — each has a distinct voice shaped by her role and personality. Even the narrative voice has personality. Lines like 'Don't underestimate these things—without them, daily life was inconvenient' and 'Fool!' (in Gu Jingwen's internal monologue) give the narration a knowing, slightly wry tone that pulls the reader in without breaking immersion.
Okay I need to just... process what I just read. The scene where Su Xi runs back to the police station and finds Lan Shen sitting in that cell - he's been arrested, detained, treated like a criminal, and he's still just sitting there waiting. When he sees her, his eyes light up. He doesn't say "I told you so" or "you didn't believe me" or anything bitter. He just says "you finally came!" like he was genuinely happy she showed up. And then he dies. Right in front of her. Glowing, turning into light, whispering those last words about entrusting Blue Star to her. She reaches for him and grabs nothing. She's screaming "wait, you haven't told me how to save Blue Star yet!" and there's just silence. I'm not even usually the crying type but I was genuinely emotional about this. This man gave everything - his power, his life, his last breath - to this girl who called the police on him. And he never once resented her for it. But what really got me was Su Xi's reaction. She's not some stoic protagonist. She's crying, she's panicking, she's hurting. And then her body starts reacting on its own, this massive surge of energy, and she can't control it. The power saves everyone but it also terrifies her. She didn't ask for any of this. The emotional core of this story isn't about saving the world - it's about a girl who lost someone she barely knew, inherited power she doesn't understand, and now has to figure out who she's supposed to be. That's the part that's going to stick with me. The rest is just plot. The feeling is what matters.
I need to talk about the dialogue in this because WOW. Every character has such a distinct voice it's almost scary. Let me just drop some of my favorite lines because I can't contain myself: "You think you'll live much longer? Everyone's waiting for you to die!" — Chu Wei, absolutely unhinged. "If you feel so sorry for Third Uncle... then go cover him yourself. Good fortune and hardship should be shared equally, shouldn't they?" — Chu Linzhang, and I SCREAMED. This man is broken, infected, starving, and he STILL has the sharpest tongue in the room. "I'll reward each of you with an eyeball." — Hua Zhiyun, said so casually like she's offering them candy. "Whoever covers him... will end up exactly like him." — This line made me laugh out loud. The way she delivers threats with a smile is her signature. And the family's dialogue? Pure venom. "Shameless woman!" "You're a jinx!" "She sold her body!" It's so vicious and so realistic—these people genuinely believe they're righteous in their hatred. The narrative voice is also incredible, especially Chu Linzhang's internal monologue. His dry observations about Hua Zhiyun's thoughts ("How can he still smile? If all four of my limbs had been crippled, I'd probably be drowning in despair") show such a fun dynamic between their perspectives. The author's voice has this dark, sharp humor that makes everything feel alive.
Who else is refreshing for the next chapter? I need more!""I love how the main character is developing! What do you guys think will happen next?""That cliffhanger was cruel! I need answers!
A good premise, but the world building is very weak. Characters have no depth and the opening scenes are inconsequential. It's just hasty, with no real stakes involved and feels like it's written by an AI.Certainly a good idea, but lacks emotions and driving goals/objectives that can move the plot forward by building a good narrative.
A solid novel with well-crafted descriptions and a good sense of realism. The attention to detail adds depth to the scenes, making them engaging. Keep up the good work, though there is still room for improvement
Amazing first introductory chapters, I'm already hooked. I hope the author can keep this flow up and empties his stack soon, cause I really can't wait
love the novel it's awesome highly recommend
This novel gave me an adrenaline rush due to how exciting it was! Waiting for the male lead's journey!
I find the stories plot to be very compelling. I love the take on family ties so far. The dangers of an assassin's world so far have kept me very much engaged in what happens next. I can't wait to read more!!!
This is great! Don't know why it wasn't already in my recommendations. As long as the quality doesn't fade, I'm a fan til the end.
