The narrative voice in this book is absolutely unhinged in the best possible way. Jiang Ning's internal monologue reads like someone who time-traveled but forgot to also time-travel their sense of dignity. 'Waaah, this is literally the road to the execution ground.' 'Waaah, she wanted to go home.' She says this shit like five times. And it's hilarious because it's so honest. Her performance in the study is a masterclass in comedic timing. She goes from terrified trembling to full-on sobbing, hugging Gu Jianshen's leg, delivering this elaborate confession-that-isn't-a-confession, and the narrator just watches her perform with deadpan observation. The line 'Confession brings leniency... can you please not resort to violence?' had me wheezing. She's treating a life-or-death interrogation like a customer service complaint. And then Gu Jianshen's actual dialogue—short, sharp, booming. 'Concubine Jiang, do you plead guilty?!' vs. his internal thoughts which are way softer. The contrast between his public voice (brass bell, scary general) and his private self (genuflecting to a window, sipping tea, noticing gold) creates this really layered sense of who he actually is versus who the world thinks he is. Handong's warnings are also great flavor: 'If you confess about Prince Jing, watch out for your whole family, young and old.' Dead serious, delivered like a grocery list. The dialogue here never takes itself seriously, which makes the actual stakes hit harder by contrast.
Princess Anhe's dialogue is absolutely vicious and I love it. Every sentence is wrapped in silk but it's basically a knife. 'Mingzhu, you've come at just the right time. Come help your auntie look over this list.' That 'auntie' — three years ago she forced Ji Mingzhu to call her that in public, and now she's using it again as a power move while simultaneously setting her up for humiliation. And then the Old Matriarch's line: 'Once the marriages for A Zheng and his brother are settled, your grandmother will help you choose a good family for you, add a few more dowry chests, and see you married off with great honor.' This sounds kind on the surface but it's actually a threat — get out of our house and marry someone irrelevant before you cause more problems. The dialogue between Xie Yunzheng and Xi Yu is also fantastic. Xi Yu is the only character who can actually talk to Xie Yunzheng without fear, and their banter is so natural: 'A friend out of thin air? Do you think I'm a fool?' vs Xie Yunzheng's icy 'You just need to answer.' The narrative voice itself is also worth noting — it stays so close to Ji Mingzhu's perspective that we get her internal monologue woven seamlessly into the narration. Her thoughts about the Junzhu's 'all merely acting' philosophy feel like genuine stream-of-consciousness rather than authorial commentary. The author's voice is restrained but sharp, never over-explaining, letting the dialogue and subtle narration carry the weight.
I need to just... I need a moment. The potato scene. Let me just sit with that for a second. Chongzhen picks up a piece of potato, points his chopsticks at Lin Yuan in the corner, and deliberately says: "We observe this potato—plump and round, resembling a swollen pancake. Tell Us... this pancake We had meticulously prepared and presented—does it smell fragrant?" And Lin Yuan's entire internal world collapses. Because "presenting a pancake" (画饼充饥) is a modern Chinese idiom. She's the only person who would think of it that way. In that moment, she's convinced he knows she's a transmigrator. She's terrified. Her face goes deathly pale. She thinks she's about to be executed. And then Chongzhen just... eats the potato. And explains he was talking about the common people — that the potato is like a cake he draws for them to satisfy their hunger. He was testing her, or teasing her, or maybe just having fun watching her panic. The text says: "His voice was neither loud nor angry." What kills me is the asymmetry of their relationship in that moment. She's internally screaming, reliving the trauma of nearly being dragged out for execution on her first day, while he's sitting there with this little smile, thoroughly amused by her inner drama. The power dynamic is so extreme it's almost cruel. But there's something oddly tender about it too — he could have punished her for her thoughts. Instead, he gives her an out and lets her save face. And then later, when he realizes she knows things he doesn't — about accounting, about unofficial histories, about concepts that shouldn't exist in this era — his reaction isn't fear or anger. It's curiosity. "Interesting." He thinks about how life might no longer be so painful with her around. How Da Ming might not fall under his watch. That's the emotional core of this whole thing. It's not romance — not yet, maybe not ever in the traditional sense. It's something deeper. Two people who are completely alone in their respective worlds, finding in each other someone who might actually understand. He sees her strangeness and instead of destroying her, he keeps her close. She sees his intelligence and competence and slowly stops seeing him as the incompetent emperor from the history books. The CP chemistry here is built on mutual discovery and quiet moments of recognition, not grand declarations. And honestly? That's way more compelling.
Okay so Du Yun is DROPPING sweat like crazy and I need to talk about this man. Like, the text literally says 'sweat beaded in his palms' and then later 'sweat poured from Du Yun's forehead' and I'm just sitting here wondering if he has hyperhidrosis or if Bai Xiaotong is just THAT intimidating to him. The guy is clearly desperate but in this weirdly endearing way? He's not some smooth operator like Fang Zhiyong apparently was—he's just a nervous wreck trying to string together a sentence. But here's what actually got me: the mom vs Bai Xiaotong question. Du Yun's answer was 'I'd save you first, then die in my mom's place.' Like… bro. That's not a romantic answer, that's a man who panicked and said whatever came to mind. But Bai Xiaotong's reaction was fascinating—she was 'stunned' and her 'expression was complicated.' She didn't laugh him off, she didn't reject him outright. She actually said 'We'll see tomorrow.' That's a win in her book, which means she's genuinely considering him despite the sweaty disaster. And then there's Lu Ling. This guy is just… appearing everywhere. Under trees, on buses, staring fixedly. He disappeared when Sister Zhang walked in and then reappeared at the bus stop. Bai Xiaotong says she doesn't want anything to do with him but she keeps LOOKING for him. She even admits she was 'wanting to show off to him again.' There's something there, something unresolved, and I am HERE for it.

This novel is good , I think it will be a hit. It would be great if there are more chapters.
This novel and its parts are well-developed. The characters are real and seem to jump out of the page. The writer's expression is of very high order and the flow of the story pacy. I very highly recommend this author. I have to say the author is very accomplished.
