This story keeps coming back to one central question: what makes a marriage real? Is it the contract, the physical intimacy, the emotional bond, or something else entirely? And the author keeps flipping the answer on its head. The most powerful symbolic moment is probably the water scene. Shen Jiaojiao asks for water while drunk, Xie Yanqing pours it, helps her drink, and then he himself downs the remaining water while his Adam's apple bobs and a droplet slides down into his bathrobe. Water as a symbol of thirst, of desire, of something needed to survive — and he's literally consuming what she couldn't finish. It's subtle but loaded. Then there's the hair. Shen Jiaojiao is "particular about cleanliness" and Xie Yanqing washes and dries her hair after she lashes out at him. Hair in literature has always been symbolic — of intimacy, of vulnerability, of care. The fact that he does this tender task for her, that he "loved her even more" for her temper, suggests that he's fallen for the REAL her, not the polished performance she's been giving. The contract itself is the biggest symbol in the story. Two years of pretending, of separate rooms, of no real affection — and yet when the contract is threatened with dissolution, Xie Yanqing's reaction is possessive and desperate. The irony is that the contract was supposed to be empty, but it became the vessel for something real. And now Shen Jiaojiao faces the ultimate contradiction: she's supposed to be the villainess who destroys this marriage, but she's the one who actually wants to save it. Little Black Ball's panic about the plot deviation is almost meta-commentary on the nature of fate versus free will. The system wants a predetermined story, but human emotion refuses to follow the script. That tension between destiny and choice is the philosophical heart of this whole narrative.
The pacing in these chapters is genuinely masterful. Let me explain why. The story opens with a high-tension scene—Lian Qiao already suffering from the Love Gu's effects, trying to figure out what went wrong, and Lu Wujiu being his usual cold, infuriating self. Within the first few paragraphs, we're already invested in their predicament. Then the author does something clever: instead of rushing to resolve the problem, they layer on complications. First, they learn the Love Gu requires them to stay within a step of each other during onsets. Then they learn the onsets are unpredictable—could be every few days, could be several times a day. Then they learn about the extreme symptoms that might require... well, let's just say intimate contact. Each piece of information raises the stakes higher. The black market scene is where the pacing really shines. It starts with the consultation fee (fifty thousand), then the antidote fee (five million), then the folk remedy reveal (whispered, excluded from Lian Qiao). Each beat escalates the tension while also providing comedic relief—Lian Qiao's internal monologue about wanting to strangle the medicine cultivator, her horror at the Kongtong Seal being stolen, her dramatic declaration that she'd rather die. And the chapter ends on a perfect cliffhanger. Lian Qiao suspects someone deliberately swapped the Gu, and the text cuts off mid-sentence: 'Not only would it disgust me, but it might even push...' Push what? Push them together? Push her to madness? The author knows exactly when to stop, leaving the reader desperate to turn the page. The only minor issue is that some of the exposition about the Love Gu's origin (the Yaoguai woman and the cultivator) feels slightly info-dumpy, but it's broken up with Lian Qiao's reactions, so it doesn't drag.
Respect your investment, try to make most of it, don give up . world building not bad... Hope you will post new chapter.......... I'm vietnamese too
Honestly was looking for a book in which the mc is overpowered and chill. And this is that book, although it has those cliche parts it’s still fun to read and not have to really think. I do hope the book expands on the world a bit more. Love it, don’t drop.
