I need to just sit with this for a moment because the emotional layering in this novel is absolutely extraordinary and I'm still recovering from the chestnut scene. Let me start with Zhou Hongyuan because honestly, he might be the most heartbreaking character I've encountered in a long time. This man runs through snow-covered roads, falls, tears his umbrella, gets mud on his robes — and all he cares about is whether the chestnuts are still warm when he gets home. When he sees Jiang Mei's reaction, he doesn't get defensive or hurt. He immediately assumes HE failed her. 'Marrying me has made you suffer.' Not 'why aren't you happy with my gift' but 'I haven't done enough for you.' This man is so thoroughly, achingly devoted that it makes my chest hurt. And Jiang Mei — oh, Jiang Mei. She's trapped in this impossible position where she knows she's going to leave him, knows she's using him, knows she married him out of obligation and survival, not love. But then he brings her WARM chestnuts in the middle of a snowstorm and she can't stop herself from feeling something. The author writes her internal conflict with such precision. She wants to wipe the sweat from his brow but her hand falls back down. She's already decided to divorce him but she's still wearing her wedding robes. She forces a smile and says 'I'll look forward to that day for you, husband' and I literally had to put the book down. The emotional complexity of her relationship with Pei Jingchuan is what really sets this novel apart though. It's not simple hatred or lingering romance. It's this tangled mess of gratitude, resentment, shame, and something she won't name. When Pei Jingchuan tells her 'there won't be a next time' and she stumbles on her way out, scraping her palm until it bleeds — and she doesn't even care about the pain because she's terrified he'll think she's playing the pity card — that's not just a scene, that's a portrait of a woman who has lost all sense of her own worth in his presence. But Pei Jingchuan's emotional arc is where the author really shows her skill. He tells his servant Bai Yi that Jiang Mei is no scoundrel, that she'd rather live in poverty than be his pampered canary. And then Bai Yi accidentally reveals that Pei Jingchuan himself was the one who saved her from humiliation, and she sweet-talked her way into swindling him. And Pei Jingchuan's face goes 'sickly green.' Why? Because he's realizing that despite everything he did for her, she chose a penniless scholar over him. The emotional whiplash of a man who thought he understood a woman suddenly finding out he understood nothing is rendered with such subtlety. The most devastating emotional moment though — and I'm still not over it — is Zhou Hongyuan holding Jiang Mei's cold, clammy hands and asking if she's unwell, completely unaware that her distress has nothing to do with physical illness. He's being so tenderly attentive while she's internally crumbling. And Wu Fangyan watching this exchange with envy? That's the author showing us, without a single word of narration, what a good man Zhou Hongyuan is. Wu Fangyan doesn't need to say 'he's a better husband than mine' — her envy says it for her. I also want to talk about the maternal thread. Zhou Hongyuan's mother raised him and his sister alone, sacrificing everything for his education. That backstory isn't just worldbuilding — it's the emotional foundation for why Zhou Hongyuan postponed consummation. He's not just being disciplined; he's honoring his mother's sacrifice. And Jiang Mei, who can't have children because of the contraceptive decoction she took, is carrying a grief that the author hasn't even fully revealed yet. I have a terrible feeling about that revelation.
Hello great author, I'm a huge fan of your work! Your book left a lasting impression on me, and I believe it has the potential to reach even more readers. I'd be honored to share some thoughts on how to enhance its impact and visibility. Would you be open to hearing my thoughts?
Shameless author alert! Writing a review for my own book—A Dream That Devours—because who else is going to hype it up like it deserves? Please indulge me a little. I’m leaving this here in case any curious readers want to drop questions. Feel free to ask me anything in the comments! Just… maybe don’t ask when I last got a full night’s sleep or why my subconscious decided to throw me into an existential crisis dream that somehow became a novel—because honestly? I still don’t know. But here we are.As for how I’d rate A Dream That Devours?Without a doubt, it’s my best book yet!…Mostly because it’s the only book I’ve written.I hope you enjoy the ride despite my skills—I'm only going to get better the more I write. Just don’t fall asleep too deeply—you never know what’s waiting on the other side.Happy reading! ?✨

I love this story so far can’t wait for more
This novel sounds like a dark and gripping (sometimes cute) take on time travel with a well-built protagonist. High potential for a thought-provoking and emotional read, especially if the author can deliver on the complex themes and keep the plot engaging.
Author Review Here!Daily updates of two chapters will start next month. In the meantime, here are some things you might want to know; Is this reverse-harem? No. Male lead REFUSES to share. How is the world setting? Not that depraved, but along the line. That’s why there’s a ‘Matured Content’ warning. That’s all the questions I can think of for now, but if you have any question this and the synopsis hasn’t answered, ask and I’ll answer. I hope you enjoy reading.
Shameless author here! This is my first novel and I have around 180+ chapters ready! Please look forward to the next chapters. It's a story that has fast pacing in the beginning and gradually delves into the worlds building and character development! There'll be a supporting cast, but it will take a few chapters for the first secondary characters to appear.
I love this story. Like it's bit similar to Pokemon, feeling nostalgic. The revenge at start is too meance. The progression is bit too slow but I lobe this.
