The author's ability to build atmosphere in this section is genuinely scary good. Let me paint the scene for you: night has fallen over the little villa, darkness swallowing everything, and then—Thump... thump... thump—the sound of a child's ball bouncing through the empty house. Followed by a crystalline little voice singing "Grandma's head is like a ball / Kick it all the way to the department store." I literally got chills. The way the author juxtaposes the mundane family drama (Shen Changhe scolding his son for asking for money, Qiao Fengying wailing about stolen cash) with this creeping supernatural dread is masterful. Earlier, we also get this gorgeous nostalgic description of the original owner's memories—the grand piano in the living room, the gramophone, parents dancing in the evening. It paints this warm, lost world that makes the current invasion by the uncle's family feel even more violating. And the dimensional space trading system? The interface lagging, the water-drop icon, the ghost sealed in a glass bottle with a tiny bell—it's this weird blend of modern app culture and supernatural folklore that somehow works. The world feels lived-in and internally consistent. Every setting, from the Beijing villa to the train to Lucheng, has distinct sensory details.
The structure of these chapters is really clever and I want to talk about how the author moves us from pure warmth to genuine unease without any jarring transitions. Chapter 23 opens with this idyllic picnic scene—kites, frisbee, a rabbit chasing sunlight. It's basically a Studio Ghibli opening. The child with lollipops is pure sweetness, and the dialogue between Shen Simo and Lu HuaiChuan about being "ordinary friends" has this light, almost comedic rhythm. You're smiling. You're relaxed. Everything feels cozy. Then Chapter 24 hits you with the Wang Jianwei message like a freight train. The tone shifts immediately—from outdoor leisure to indoor suspicion. Shen Simo realizing her phone may have been accessed, her sudden urgency about hurrying to the studio, the internal monologue about her secret plans. The pacing accelerates hard. And then Chapter 25 drops the Lycoris radiata line and the whole emotional temperature changes again. What I love is how the painting setup functions as a structural anchor. Lu HuaiChuan is literally preparing to capture her image while she's mentally plotting her escape. The act of painting becomes a metaphor for the entire relationship—he's trying to freeze a moment, to understand her, while she's already moving toward the next scene. The chapter ends on a question about wishes, which feels deceptively simple but carries so much weight given everything we just learned. The author knows exactly when to slow down and when to accelerate, and this section is a masterclass in controlled pacing.

I just devoured this book and I'm still reeling from the experience! The chemistry between Kane and King is undeniable, and their complex, twisted dynamic had me hooked from start to finish. The writing is witty, insightful, and utterly captivating - I couldn't get enough of these characters and their forbidden, slow-burn romance!
I really like the pacing and the action scenes fit very nice… stopped to review but I will be reading more! Loving this system!
