I need to just sit with this for a second. The scene where Lin Xinhua grabs his sister's sleeve and says 'Sis, tell me. I can't keep living in the dark'—I actually had to put the book down. There's something so heartbreaking about a teenager who's been protected from the truth but is desperate to know what's really happening in his own family. And Lin Zhaoyang's response, where she finally stops shielding him and explains everything about the college exam substitution plan, about how their grandmother Du wanted to use Nini's identity to send both of them to university... it's devastating when you think about it. This girl was offered a chance to share her future with her sister, and instead she exposed the whole scheme and embarrassed her grandfather. She chose integrity over family loyalty, and that must have been SO lonely. But then she has her brother, and they're in this together. The moment where they're packing up their stuff and Lin Daheng says 'Your mother and I are useless. We've made you two suffer' and Lin Zhaoyang hugs his arm and acts spoiled like everything is fine? I'm not okay. That parent-child relationship is so tender and real. They're going through something terrible but they're doing it as a unit, and that warmth is what keeps this story from becoming just another revenge tale. It's family, messy and broken and fighting, but they've got each other.
Okay so I need to talk about the cellar scene because I literally could not stop thinking about it after I finished reading. The way Shang Qingyan goes from having his hand on Yu Ange's neck with pure murderous intent to casually picking a piece of straw off their collar like nothing happened? That is such a him move. He's this deeply paranoid, traumatized prince who has spent his whole life being plotted against, and yet here is this person who literally risked their life to save him and he STILL can't figure out why. The fact that he leans in closer when he smells that pine scent and his mind goes blank for a moment — that is not the behavior of someone who is purely calculating. That is the behavior of someone who is dangerously close to feeling something they don't understand. And Yu Ange! God, Yu Ange is so layered. She wakes up from this horrific dream where she sees her own corpse hanging from the city gate, screams Shang Qingyan's name in her sleep, and then when he asks what dream it was, she literally says "I forgot it as soon as I woke up." BRO. You do not forget a dream where you are weeping over someone's dead body. That is not how memory works. But she deflects with perfect composure because she knows if he finds out she has memories from a past life, she loses everything. The dynamic between them is so deliciously tense. They are both performing for each other constantly. Shang Qingyan says "those who get involved with me never come to a good end" and Yu Ange replies "I know the worst possible outcome, so I'm not afraid." That right there is the entire relationship in one exchange. She sees through his disguise completely — even the Emperor was fooled for years and Yu Ange saw right through it. And he can't see through hers at all. They are both pretending to be someone they're not, and they're both dangerously attracted to each other while pretending it doesn't exist. I am HERE for it.
The title of this chapter alone is a masterclass in narrative voice. A wild pigeon plucked its own feathers so you could roast it. Who says that? Only someone who is simultaneously affectionate, amused, and completely unimpressed by their husband's terrible lies. The dialogue between Mu Hanhe and Xiao Guiwan is so deceptively simple. Look at this exchange: Are you asleep? Not yet. Her finger slid from his arm to the back of his hand before slipping between his fingers, intertwining them. Her hand was much smaller than his. Soft. Cool. Mu Hanhe tightened his grip around her hand, gently stroking the back of it with his thumb. She hummed in satisfaction and inched even closer until her whole body nestled against his. That is not exposition. That is not narration telling us they are in love. That is action and sensory detail doing all the work. And then the pigeon scene. Do we raise pigeons now? A wild pigeon. It flew in last night. I roasted it. Was it good? Not bad. Next time you roast one, save me a bite. I would like to taste wild pigeon too. All right. The feather was spotless. No blood. No singed edges. What kind of considerate wild pigeon would pluck out its own feathers before flying in so you could roast it? Yeah, right. This is the kind of internal monologue that makes you laugh out loud. The author lets us in on the joke while the characters play their roles. The narrative voice shifts seamlessly between intimate third-person limited and that sharp, knowing internal commentary. And Xiao Shuwan's section? Her dialogue is almost entirely internal—calculating, ambitious, cold. The people I have sent to spy on Xiao Guiwan had reported that the couple had already consummated their marriage. Good. The wife of a mud-legged peasant would spend the rest of her life buried in the dirt. The contrast in narrative voice between the two women is staggering. One lives in warm domesticity with hidden depths. The other lives in gilded ambition with hidden rot.
Meow, the writing style is familiar, it reminds me of other novel. Although the chapter title’s meaning is too vague except for chap 2 but for me it’s fine. Nice joke and well-described in the book. But what I don’t understand is why the girl knock him out and just leave him alone. since MC is new to this world, he needs to learn what’s in the world so maybe that girl can be his teacher? That’s what I thought. Perhaps, DE you planning something cool so I’ll just keep reading.Meow
"Chasing Stars, Finding You" is a gripping and suspenseful novel that masterfully blends mystery, betrayal, and high-stakes intrigue. The protagonist, Alyssa, is a compelling character whose relentless pursuit of the truth leads her into a dangerous web of secrets. With each chapter, the tension builds, revealing unexpected twists and powerful emotional moments. The pacing is excellent, keeping readers engaged while deepening the stakes. The writing is immersive, with vivid descriptions and well-developed characters. Overall, this book is a thrilling read that will leave readers eagerly turning pages until the very end. Highly recommended for fans of suspenseful, high-stakes storytelling!
I like the story. The issue I'm having is that The author is repeating themselves over and over again by writing the same thing in different ways. There are entire chapters that are written about something that would take maybe a paragraph. Half the time you can read the first paragraph and then skim the entire rest of the chapter and still understand very clearly what happened. Other than that, I like the idea of the story. I like the writing of the story, but too much expounding on things that don't matter much.
I like it so far. needs to be updated more frequently. I would update the score if that happens. it's different from but the same in the genre. enough to want to keep reading. it's hard to find a book that keeps my interests. most I've read or the lose my interest because they get way crazy with no build up on foundation.
