The atmosphere in these opening chapters is something else. Let me just say it—the contrast between the glittering surface of Chang'an and the rot underneath is painted with such precision it's almost cinematic. The text opens with this line about the Great Yong Dynasty being in its "inevitable decline" and then immediately cuts to the streets humming with "song, dance, and apparent prosperity—a facade preserving the last glittering image of the fading realm." That's not just setting, that's the entire thesis of the novel in one sentence. And then we go outside the Duke's gate and hear the weeping. Parents selling children. Commonplace. No one stops to look. Even the servants are impatient with the crying. The world feels so alive because every detail is earned—no lazy descriptions, no filler. The bathing scene is a perfect example: the steaming tubs, the warning about lice and fleas, the explanation that ordinary families can't afford daily baths because water and firewood cost money. This is worldbuilding that doesn't stop to explain itself to the reader. It just shows us a world where a seven-year-old girl's greatest fear isn't monsters or ghosts—it's being rejected and sold somewhere worse. The courtyard with its three main rooms and side chambers, the wooden tubs, the bare plank beds, the single bronze mirror shared by six girls—every object tells a story about this household's priorities and this era's inequalities. And the food scene at the end with the porridge and steamed buns? It's modest by noble standards but probably luxurious for these girls. The world feels lived-in because the author never forgets that even in a Duke's mansion, everything has a cost.
Let me just say - the pacing in these chapters is absolutely relentless and I cannot complain. We start with this ridiculous cat show-off scene with Xiao Yu and Mi Su, which is pure comedy gold, then we pivot to Leon revealing his identity to Hearn, then we have the wardrobe disaster with Xiao Yu's family, and somehow it all works. The transition from the cat cafe to Xiao Yu's apartment is where things really pick up. The author knows exactly when to slow down and when to speed up. The wardrobe scene alone has so many beats - Mother Xiao opening the door, the scream, the family rushing in, Father Xiao fainting from high blood pressure. It's chaotic in the best way possible. And that cliffhanger ending! Father Xiao in the hospital, Xiao Yu peeling an apple like some kind of devoted son (when really he's just trying to keep the peace), and then the chapter just ends mid-thought. I needed more immediately. What's impressive is how the author balances multiple plot threads without losing momentum. Leon's investigation into the illegal drugs, his relationship with Xiao Yu, the boxing career complications, the family drama - it all gets woven together without feeling rushed. The Hearn scene where Leon demonstrates his boxing moves as a cat is both funny and a perfect way to establish trust while keeping the pacing light. The only thing I'd say is that some transitions could use a tiny bit more breathing room, but honestly the energy is so high that I didn't mind. This chapter made me want to immediately start the next one.

Only problem so far is that I need more chapters! The world building caught my attention and I'm already excited to see how Odessa's story unfolds with the alpha king. He seems intense so far.
