Let me just say this: the stakes in this passage are INCREDIBLE and I need everyone to understand how well the author maintains tension across multiple conflict layers simultaneously. On the surface level, Su Jiuyue is being forced into a marriage with a diseased man while her stepmother watches with murderous intent. If she refuses, she faces social ruin. If she complies, she faces death. She has no winning move—except the one she creates by revealing her medical knowledge. But the external conflict is only the tip of the iceberg. There is the internal conflict of Su Jiuyue having to decide how much of her true self to reveal. Every time she uses her medical knowledge, she risks exposing herself to people like Li Guilan who will then hunt for her mother's inherited medical texts. The old military doctor at the end already suspects she might be connected to the Ghost Physician. She is walking a razor's edge. And then there is Huo Zhixing's internal conflict, which is honestly the most compelling layer. This man who controls everything around him is completely undone by a woman whose scent changes when she is nervous. He threatens to tie her up because he cannot trust himself around her. The stakes between them are emotional and physical and neither of them knows how this ends. Li Guilan's plot is still active—she is already calculating where Su Jiuyue hid her mother's belongings. The conflict is not resolved, it is escalating. And that is why I cannot stop reading. Every chapter raises the temperature. Every scene adds a new layer of danger. The author never lets you breathe and I am absolutely grateful for that.
