Okay, I need to talk about this scene because it is ABSOLUTELY cinematic. The contrast between the foul-smelling swill puddle and the pristine white cloth under the morning sun—like, the author really knew what they were doing with the imagery here. I could literally see it. The yellow-brown filth spreading across the ground, the sour pungent odor driving away the delicious meat aroma, and then Su Qingyan lifting that steaming basket with lotus leaves inside. The visual of white cloth and green lotus leaves contrasting with the disgusting mess at their feet? Chef's kiss. But it's not just the main confrontation scene—the whole street feels lived-in. You've got the Taixue students, the laborers, Grandma Lin with her drink cart, Wang Du Head patrolling, Liu Sanniang watching from her shop across the street. The author drops little details everywhere: the clinking of coins as Su Mingxuan's money pouch fills, the oily lips of the students devouring buns, the warm golden glow of the setting sun on Maichaoxiang Lane. These aren't just decorative—they make the world feel like a real place where real people live and compete and survive. And that ending image of the family sitting around the oil lamp counting copper coins, with the mountain of 1,200 wen shimmering under the dim yellow light? That's the kind of domestic warmth that grounds the whole story. It's not just a business rivalry; it's about survival, about a family trying to make it work. The worldbuilding here is subtle but effective—you learn about the economy, the social hierarchy, the food culture, all through what people eat and how they earn their keep.
Okay I need to talk about the bank card moment because my heart literally raced. "Thwack!" Just that one sound word and the entire scene flips. One second Shen Xingyao is being torn apart by Wu Lele and those horrible sales assistants, and the next—black card, metallic sheen, slapped on the counter like a gavel. The way the author builds this is masterful. We're inside Shen Xingyao's head the whole time, feeling her panic about the money, her calculation, her fear of being exposed. And then—boom. She had the power all along. Or at least, the appearance of power. Which is honestly the same thing in this world. But what got me wasn't even the victory. It was the line right after: "Spending the company's money, flaunting her own style, and slapping her enemy in the face!" There's this weird, complicated emotion in that sentence. She's using money that isn't really hers to prove she belongs in a world that would crush her if it knew the truth. And she feels guilty about it—"her heart was twitching uncontrollably"—but the satisfaction is so much stronger. I kept thinking about Pei Yanqiu during this whole scene. Not because he's there—he's not—but because Shen Xingyao picked out that men's outfit for him. Size 185. She imagined him in it. And then she bought it anyway, even though she has no idea what their relationship actually is right now. Is that hope? Is that strategy? Is that just her being human and wanting to do something nice for the guy who's apparently her boss and possibly more? I don't know. But it made my chest hurt in a good way. Like when you're watching a movie and the main character finally gets their moment and you just want to scream at the screen. This author understands that the best emotional payoffs aren't just about winning—they're about what winning costs you.
