Still in -100? ??
I believe there's an appealing aspect to this narrative, but it's dishonest to claim it's perfect. My primary issue lies in its overwhelming complexity. The story tries to encompass a mystery, drama, tragedy, psychological thriller, and horror, but it feels chaotic and unfulfilling to me.
The plot has indeed advanced within these thirty chapters, but the protagonist's growth feels stagnant, which I attribute largely to the persistent atmosphere. The story is drowning in angst and mature, gloomy themes. Characters are consistently anguished or sad, and it seems the narrative keeps saying, "No, that's not enough."
While it might improve later on, I've decided against continuing, as there are other stories – better and worse – that I find more enjoyable. I'll be moving on from this one. If you find the premise intriguing, I encourage you to give it a shot. If you dislike it, I understand. If you love it, that's fantastic. However, if you genuinely appreciate this style, you might be leaning towards a very specific taste, and I'd advise seeking help if you relate too closely to the characters, seriously.
The translation is generally accurate, with errors that are minor enough to be easily overlooked. However, I do have a few concerns. The continued usage of Japanese terms like "onions," "-san," and "-sama" feels inconsistent and disrupts the flow for me. I've previously brought up this issue and am aware that the translator tends to include them.
What I really struggle with are parts of the narrative structure. There were instances where the main character (MC) claimed not to have done something in another world, which left me confused until much later in the story. For example, the explanation about the MC surviving six years without food or water took place after several chapters of wondering how that was possible. The details provided, such as self-devouring and mana consumption, were inaccurate – he actually bit and consumed parts of himself and drank his own blood.
In storytelling, subtleties should pique readers' curiosity to be resolved later, not leave them bewildered. Another issue I encounter is the overuse of "cooking" scenes, which is a common cliché in Japanese literature. These lengthy descriptions often cause me to skip over them.
Fortunately, these cooking segments are confined to a single chapter rather than stretching across multiple chapters for a single dish, which has been a frustrating experience in other works. Overall, while the translation is decent, these narrative quirks detract from the reading experience for me.
