FulltimeMadman
"A gentleman stays away from the kitchen." That line hit me like a ton of bricks right at the start. Here we are, Yu Zhu standing in a kitchen full of rabbits and venison, and the narrator is telling us she's a gentleman. The irony is so thick you could spread it on bread. But seriously, the plot structure in these chapters is doing something really clever. On the surface, it's just... domestic life? Eating, making rice cakes, talking about weddings. But underneath, the entire narrative is building toward this massive collision course. Prince Jin is preparing to marry the princess consort, and every single scene is layered with dramatic irony. We know Yu Zhu is doomed, and she's just... making rice cakes. She's thinking about whether Xue Ningshuang will like the osmanthus flavor. The wedding announcement itself is the plot's ticking clock. Every mention of red lanterns, red carpets, the eight-bearer sedan chair—it's all counting down. And the best part? Prince Jin genuinely doesn't seem to understand the damage he's causing. When he says "you will always be different," the reader is screaming. He thinks he's being sweet. He has no idea he's carving her heart out with every word. I also love how the author uses the rice cakes as a plot device. Yu Zhu spends the whole afternoon making them, and then sends them away instead of delivering them herself. It's a small moment but it changes everything—Prince Jin is confused, Lan Xi is frustrated, and we're left wondering if Yu Zhu is protecting herself or protecting him. The author is playing 4D chess with domestic details, and I am here for it.
"Let her go." Two words. That's all it took. Two words from Yan Ye and my heart literally stopped. I need to talk about this scene because I am NOT okay. Xu Xiaoyue is trapped in that alley, Wang Hao has her pinned against the wall, he's tearing at her clothes, and the tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife. She's terrified, she's struggling, and then — just when you think it's going to get worse — Yan Ye appears like some kind of dark savior figure. The way the author writes Yan Ye's reaction when he sees her is everything. "Her face was drenched in sweat, her nose and eyelashes red. She panted heavily, her body trembling uncontrollably. An inexplicable, indescribable restlessness surged in Yan Ye's chest." That restlessness — is that concern? Is that something else? Because I think it's something else. And the fact that he immediately attributes it to disgust at Wang Hao's behavior? Classic deflection. He's not ready to admit what he's feeling. Then he carries her on his back. The description of Xu Xiaoyue leaning against him, her hair brushing his cheek, that faint fragrance — it's so intimate and yet neither of them acknowledges it. Yan Ye's eyes "instantly darkened" and he has to cross his legs to hide his reaction. Xu Xiaoyue thinks he's just being stern and scolding her. The dramatic irony is KILLING me. And then the forehead wound scene? "Close your eyes." She closes them. He applies the alcohol. She whines "it hurts, gently please" and he feels this wave of heat surge through him. I am SCREAMING. The romantic tension is off the charts and I need the next chapter immediately.
Okay so let me just say this out loud because I need to process it: He Yuanzhou is NOT the cold, emotionless robot the original novel described. The text makes it painfully clear that he's been lying low this whole time and Jiang Wu has no idea what she's walking into. Think about it. He catches her at a club and instead of just scolding her, he takes her to a private booth and makes her dance. That's not the reaction of a man who doesn't care. That's the reaction of a man who is actively, deliberately trying to provoke something out of her. And when she tries to play the pitiful wife act? He sees right through it immediately. "You think I want to do what?" — bro, he is NOT playing. The most telling moment is his internal monologue about physiological attraction. Fang Ye's theory about genes choosing you hits different when the narrative itself confirms it. He Yuanzhou knows she's a fraud, knows she's two completely different people depending on who's watching, and yet his body betrays him every single time. He calls it pathetic. I call it the most interesting character development in this entire batch. And then there's the scene where he finds out she's having dinner with Fang Ye instead of waiting for him. The way the narrative shifts — Xu Jin's silent pity, He Yuanzhou's darkening gaze — it's like the entire story suddenly realizes this man is about to lose his mind. He brought her along to extinguish Fang Ye's interest and instead she became the very thing he's now threatened by. Who is this man really?
Okay, let me just say this: the scene where An Ruoyan SLAPS Zhou Shuchen is absolutely chef's kiss. I literally sat up in bed reading that. She walks into his house, plays the delicate victim for his parents, drops the bomb about Shi Meijiao, and then when Zhou Shuchen tries to play the 'oh you love me so much, here take a hug' idiot—SMAK. Blood on her nails. I was screaming. But what I love about the plot structure here is how carefully the author builds to this moment. First, we see An Ruoyan being pushed around by her stepmother, who registers her for the countryside program with ALARMING speed. Then she decides to take matters into her own hands—go confront the scumbag herself. The author sets up this ticking clock: she leaves the day after tomorrow, so she HAS to deal with this now. That's smart plotting. Every scene has urgency. And then the river scene! Shi Meijiao and Zhou Shuchen literally jump into a river together, clinging to each other like some twisted romantic comedy gone wrong. The four men who saved them—that detail about nearly being dragged in too? Perfect. It's darkly funny and shows exactly how pathetic these two are. I couldn't stop laughing. The plot twist I didn't see coming was Zhou's mother actually being on An Ruoyan's side. She's the only adult in this whole mess who makes sense. She calls Shi Meijiao 'unchaste' and tells her to stay away from her son. Meanwhile, An Ruoyan is just trying to survive and get out of there. The fact that she has NO interest in marrying Zhou Shuchen even after all this? That's the real power move.
read it guys.an good romance experience

A great novel, with well-executed dialogues. The description is decent but could use some development. Overall, the novel is excellent.

Buhahaha! ?I honestly think the story should be in third pov, that way it would cover a lot of things. It could even include the recent ones; The guy who started burning in the streetsThe thieves who got lost in a house, only to find ghostThe thieve who started burning in the street without dying. The guy who drank beer at a graveyard. So much potential??
