I need to talk about Old Madam and Yu Yue because this relationship is the emotional backbone of the whole story and honestly it wrecked me a little. When Yu Yue says to the grandmother: 'I don't have a maternal grandmother, and I've always remembered how much you've loved and cared for me over the years. In my heart, you are my own grandmother.' — I actually had to pause the book. That line is so simple and so devastating. This woman has been grieving her own family connections and found one in an elderly matriarch who could have easily rejected her. And Old Madam! She's furious at the divorce not because she cares about Fu Jingyan — clearly she doesn't, she called him a blockhead — but because she sees how much Yu Yue deserves better. She literally brings durian, Yu Yue's favorite, and when Yu Yue vomits from the smell, Old Madam's first instinct is concern, not suspicion. She has no idea her granddaughter-in-law is pregnant with another man's child right under her nose. The tragedy of that scene is almost unbearable. Old Madam saying 'men should be ordered around like this' while watching Fu Jingyan fetch chili oil for his wife — she thinks this is a happy marriage. She has no idea the marriage is about to end and that Yu Yue is carrying a secret that could shatter everything. Meanwhile, the romantic tension between Yu Yue and Fu Jingyan is this weird, aching thing. He's apologizing, being generous, trying to make things right. She's polite, distant, internally calculating how to detach herself completely. Neither of them knows the full story. And that gap between what they feel and what they know — that's where the real emotional power lives.
"Jiaojiao, remember this. From now on, anything Mom buys belongs to you. No one is allowed to take it. And if anyone dares to, Mom will beat them with the fire poker!" I need to sit down. I literally need to sit down right now. This is the moment. This is the moment where everything changes for Su Jiuyue and her daughter. Because before this, she was just surviving—just trying to keep her head above water in a life that had been systematically stripped from her. But here, holding her daughter's hand at the supply cooperative, buying fruit and cake and candy and fabric, she's making a declaration. Not just to the world, but to herself. The detail about Jiaojiao's question—"If we buy food… will Uncle and Brother Tao Tao come and take it away again?"—hit me like a truck. This poor child has been conditioned to believe she doesn't deserve anything. That her brother gets everything, that she has to give it up, that her own father's family treats her like an afterthought. And Su Jiuyue hearing this, feeling that needle in her heart, vowing to protect her daughter—this is pure, unfiltered maternal love. I also loved the scene where Su Jiuyue squats down and wipes Jiaojiao's tears after the whole Li Yanchuan incident. She forces a smile even though she's shaking. She tells her daughter "the bad man is gone" like she's shielding her from something even more terrifying than she is. And then Jiaojiao's response—"When Jiaojiao grows up, I'll help you beat up all the bad guys!"—made me ugly cry into my pillow. The mother-daughter bond in this story is everything. It's not romantic, it's not the typical love story setup, but it's arguably more powerful. Su Jiuyue's entire motivation isn't revenge—it's Jiaojiao. Revenge is only half of it. The other half is making sure her daughter grows up healthy, happy, and safe. That line at the end—"As long as Mommy is here, no one will ever take what's ours"—is the kind of thing that stays with you. And honestly, the fact that Su Jiuyue can be this fierce and ruthless to Li Yanchuan but so tender with her daughter? That contrast is what makes her character so compelling. She's not just a victim who got her revenge. She's a mother who finally found her voice.
Okay so let me just say this: the moment Han Sheng asked Ali to marry him in front of Fang Shubai? I literally threw my phone across the room. Not because it was dramatic (though it absolutely was) but because the plot had been building to this for so long and I was tired of watching Ali suffer. Fang Shubai literally engineered her entire downfall — sold her father's house, ruined her reputation, spread rumors that she drugged Master Li — and then had the audacity to show up at Han Sheng's door like he still had a claim on her. And Han Sheng just... punched him. Then proposed. In one breath. That man does not mess around. The way Fang Shubai kept trying to manipulate the situation, thinking Ali would never choose anyone but him, while Han Sheng was quietly falling for her the entire time? The parallel between their approaches is everything. Fang Shubai uses control and destruction. Han Sheng uses protection and honesty. The plot structure here is so satisfying because every conflict converges in that one scene. Fang Shubai's mother pushing the arranged marriage with Miss Lin while Fang Shubai is obsessing over Ali? That's a ticking time bomb I cannot wait to see explode.
The atmosphere in these chapters is *chef's kiss*. Let me start with the rain. It's not just weather — it's a mood. "Rain beat against the wisteria, making a crackling sound with no sign of letting up." That line. The wisteria, the rain, the sound — it paints this entire scene in watercolor. You can feel the dampness. You can smell the wet earth. And then there's the contrast: Xiao Cheng in his expensive clothes sitting in this shabby little herbal shop, tapping his long fingers on the table, smoking, watching her. The visual of him is so sharp — "broad and large, beautiful and bony, with prominent veins pulsing beneath the thin skin." This man is carved from marble and menace. But then we cut to the family kitchen, pungent ginger soup smell filling every room, kids wrinkling their noses, the clatter of bowls. It's gritty and real and warm. The author doesn't just describe settings — they make you LIVE in them. Even the detail about Lin Aiyun's cigarette burn on her chest, how it broke the skin slightly, how it would heal in a few days — it's visceral. You can feel the sting just reading it. This world feels tangible, like you could walk through it.
