Let me just appreciate the sensory details in this excerpt because the author is doing something special with atmosphere. The opening scene — late night, the campsite blanketed in silence except for the occasional sound of someone slapping mosquitoes. These nobles, accustomed to luxurious lives, marched all day and collapsed instantly. The image of them sleeping so deeply that they 'couldn't wake up' sets this exhausted, fragile mood perfectly. And then Hua Zhiyun, alone on her rock, burning mosquito coils and eating secret snacks while everyone else is too terrified to approach her. The contrast between her small comforts and their desperate situation is so vividly rendered. Then the escape sequence — the woods at night, Black Wind the warhorse rubbing its head against Chu Linzhang, the deliberate restraint in its pace because it senses something is wrong with its master. That horse is a character in itself. And then the ghost maze, the torches, the officers panting with fury, the sudden shift from darkness to blinding light. And the most haunting image: Chu Linzhang, unable to control his horse with reins, being carried on its back like a broken weapon. The War God Prince, reduced to this. I could see this scene as a film — the moonlight through the trees, the horse's steady breathing, the Prince's blank stare. The worldbuilding here isn't about dumping lore on you; it's about making every scene feel tangible and alive.
I am not okay. Liu Jian'an's response to Prince Zhao: "If I hadn't come, wouldn't you have had to trouble yourself to march all the way north to capture me?" THAT IS THE BEST LINE IN THESE CHAPTERS. I laughed out loud. This is a man who just got his army destroyed by 3,500 cavalry and he's still making witty remarks. The author clearly loves this character. But honestly, the dialogue throughout is surprisingly sharp for a historical novel. Gu Ningxi's exchanges with her mother feel REAL — the concern, the deflection, the unspoken things. Her conversation with Meng Ting has this easy rhythm, like people who've just rediscovered each other but already feel comfortable. Even the court dialogue has weight — when the Minister of Works gives Gu Ningxi the embankment assignment, it's brief, professional, and tells us everything about her reputation. The storyteller's narration is a nice touch too — it lets the author deliver exposition through performance, which feels organic rather than info-dumpy.
First Book I've Read. Here's things Id' like to point out since my expectations are still low:• Main Character's Name is still unknown, maybe it has to do with the story?• Complex Characters. I personally enjoy them.. like how they seem to be staying in a way that would keep you guessing how they'll react. Especially that one icy personality of a friend.• Since it's a mystery, It's really cool how you interpreted ( ■ ) as something that's easy to guess, like what we're gonna guess is somewhat in the right track.• Cool uses of ( —, -, –) in the story.
I absolutely enjoy this novel, but I can't say too much since I'm only 30 chapters in so far definitely recommend this one! ?u200d? can't wait for more.
Dear Author, I'm a big admirer of your writing! After reading your book, I was blown away by your talent. I have some ideas on how to take your book to the next level and expand its readership. Would you be willing to listen to my feedback and suggestions?
The writing quality is good and engaging. Also the first chapter was rather interesting. Good read. Do recommend others. Keep up the good work, Author-san.I'd give 8/10.
the starting is just pure garbage, the mc became heartless immediately the system activated
I just read the first chapter and I'm hooked already. This is gonna be an amazing journey, I'm sure of it. Kudos to you, author!
The sheer size of everything is awsome - Makes the Empire in Star Wars look like nothing. Crazy awsome!
The first chapter itself had me hooked. The way Silas handled the rejection and his father's ignorance was so satisfying. I love a strong MC & it's exactly that. Very good job ??
This novel keeps getting better and better every chapter, only thing is, we dont really have that many chapters to read yet :(. but this is peak.
This novel was really was a treasure, the first chapter are pretty boring but the later ones seem to be written by a different author altogether, they are so good. A true hidden gem that needs more exposure.
