"A family of venomous scorpions and bloodsuckers, all hoping to live off others without lifting a finger, eager to drain every last drop, preying on the foolish..." A-Man says this about the Yao family, and it lands on Shen Xinyan too—"The last sentence seemed to refer to Shen Xinyan, yet also to herself." That double reference is the thesis statement of this entire novel, isn't it? The imagery of draining, sucking, feeding off others runs through everything. The Yao family has been feeding off Shen Xinyan's dowry and shop revenues while her husband lives in a "secluded paradise" with beautiful wives and concubines, blessed with sons and daughters. The money for his lavish lifestyle comes directly from her monthly allowance. She is literally being consumed by the people who married her, and she didn't even know it. And then there's the body swap—the literal swapping of identities, of bodies, of who gets to live and who gets to die. Yao Jinfeng exchanged clothes with a dead soldier and walked away free while that soldier's family presumably mourned a hero who was actually a coward. The novel keeps coming back to this idea of surfaces versus realities: fake military glory, fake death, fake mourning, fake authority. Everyone in the Yao household is performing a role, and Shen Xinyan has been playing her part—grieving, paying, obeying—while the real story was happening underneath. Tai Furen's courtyard is another layer of this. She's the widow of a general, a woman who once wielded broadswords on the battlefield, now reduced to managing household politics through slaps and bamboo rods. She's performing grandmotherly authority while actually being the most dangerous person in the room. And A-Man—she was supposed to be destroyed, sent to a brothel to be despised, but she climbed back up and built an intelligence network from the ashes. The novel keeps asking: who is really in power, and who is just pretending? Shen Xinyan's answer to that question is what I'm most curious about. She's been called foolish, gullible, a jinx. But she's also the one who survived. And now she knows the truth.
The fishing sequence in these chapters is one of the most vividly written scenes I've read in ages. Let me paint it for you: the river is 'cool and clear,' the sun is setting and painting 'mountain edges with layers of orange and purple dusk—stunning.' This isn't just background description; the author uses the environment to mirror the emotional shift in the story. These kids have never known freedom, never known the joy of catching your own food, and the river becomes this space where they can finally just... be children. I love how Lin Yue teaches them to fish. The detail about sunlight reflecting off the water and tricking their vision—'the position you see and where the fish actually are don't match'—this is the kind of specific, grounded detail that makes the world feel real. You can practically feel the cold water, see the fish flashing gold as Da Ya strikes. And the fire-making scene! Tearing paper from the egg tray, secretly lighting it while the kids are distracted—this is such a clever use of her spatial storage without making it feel like a cheat. The author balances the supernatural element so carefully that it never overshadows the human moments. The contrast between the harsh reality (yellow mud on Gu Dafu's wife's face, the blood-stained woven basket) and these moments of beauty (the golden fish, the purple dusk) is what makes the world feel alive and layered.

While POV stories aren't really my cup of tea, I find myself invested, having read only to chapter two so far. Yet, I'm a fan. Excellent storytelling. Highly recommended.
This chapter expertly heightens the suspense with a chilling confrontation that brings the supernatural threat to life. The vivid descriptions of the entity and the group’s growing fear create palpable tension, while their strained dynamics add depth to the story. The ritual scene is gripping, and the foreboding ending leaves readers eager for more. A strong, suspenseful continuation.
5.0 because it is a sequel of my favorite Novel WAO and I know that the Author will Not disappoint
Lacks world building, time references dialouge is ok at best. Grammar is OK, it is readable, that is all I can give it in terms of compliments.
