Okay so I just finished this chunk and I am SHOOK. Let me talk about the plot mechanics here because this author knows how to string a reader along. The opening scene is a masterclass in tension escalation. You've got Liu Laizi pointing out Su Jiuyue like some kind of rat, the Public Security officer stopping the jeep, and then—BAM—Huo Zhixing drops the "she's my wife" line. I literally gasped out loud. The way the author builds from a routine traffic stop into a full-blown military confrontation in three paragraphs? That's not accidental. That's craft. And then the drug subplot kicks in. Su Jiuyue gets drugged, Huo Zhixing has to carry her to safety, and suddenly you've got this incredibly charged situation where neither of them can think straight. The bathroom scene that follows is where the plot does something really interesting—it takes what could have been a boring "rescue" moment and turns it into the inciting incident for their entire relationship. She wakes up three days later, he's already investigated her background, and he's decided she's staying. That's not just plot convenience, that's character-driven decision-making. He needs her as his "medicine" and he's not letting go. The grandfather's entrance at the end? Perfect cliffhanger. Old Wang from the retired cadres already knows everything, the old commander is storming upstairs with a cane, and Huo Zhixing just stands there with this unreadable expression. I need the next chapter immediately. "You brought this on yourself." That line alone tells you everything about how this man operates. He doesn't ask permission—he takes responsibility and then some.
The pacing in these chapters is actually really impressive when you think about it. We start with a murder case discussion — that's high tension, that's drama. Then we cut to Qiao Huan walking home with Lei Ting, and the tone shifts to humor and backstory. Then we go to the village chief's house, where the tension builds again but in a completely different way — it's domestic tension, romantic tension, the kind where a mother worries about rumors. Then the surgery scene. Three hours pass in the narrative and we get this quiet, focused sequence that's almost meditative. No dialogue, just procedure. And then — WHAM — Jian Ying appears at the door like a plot twist dressed as a background character. The author knows exactly when to speed up and when to slow down. The Lei Ting backstory is a breather between the murder case and the surgery. The conversation with Jian Ying at the end is a hook that propels us into the next chapter. And the romantic moments are sprinkled throughout like seasoning — a hand held, a blush, a kiss on the cheek, a whispered 'we are objects, right?' What I appreciate most is that the author never lets any single tone dominate. Humor, romance, medical tension, mystery, family dynamics — they all get their moment, and the transitions feel natural rather than jarring. The chapter endings are particularly good: Chapter 5 ends with the surgery completion and a sweet domestic moment, Chapter 6 ends with a new character introduction that opens up fresh possibilities. No cliffhangers, just forward momentum.
I need to talk about the locker room scene because I am NOT okay. Zhong Suian walks into a door and bumps straight into a warm solid body, and the description?? 'Tiny droplets of water slid from the ends of his hair, traveled across his chest and abdomen, followed the lines of his V-shaped waist, and disappeared beneath the waistband of his shorts, leaving a damp patch behind.' I REPEAT MYSELF. The author really just served us THAT and expected me to keep reading normally? And then she REFLEXIVELY SQUEEZES HIS CHEST twice before snapping back to reality. I am wheezing. But what's funny is that Zhong Suian herself is fully aware of what she's doing — she's literally thinking 'No wonder everyone liked athletic guys' and then later in the stands she's still obsessing about him, wondering if he'd be quiet in bed. This girl has zero filter and I love her for it. The CP energy between them is built entirely on this one accidental encounter, which is such a classic romance setup but executed with enough humor and self-awareness that it doesn't feel stale. Also the fact that he barely speaks — described almost like a mute — just adds to the mysterious attractive energy. Shen Jibai has literally three lines in these chapters and already I'm invested. What kind of author are you.
I need to talk about Jiang Chuyao because WOW. The girl who used to take everything silently? The one who wouldn't even speak up when her parents scolded her? She's completely transformed. And the best part is how natural it feels. The scene where Jiang Chuying tries the whole 'Yao Yao, are you upset with me?' act and Jiang Chuyao just smiles and says 'what?' — that moment told me everything. The old Jiang Chuyao would've stayed silent, would've let it slide. But now? She literally says 'Little brat, still thinking I'm the same as before?' That internal monologue gave me chills. And Lu Xiaohan! Their friendship is so wholesome. Lu Xiaohan immediately steps up to protect her, calls out Jiang Chuying's nonsense without hesitation, and then immediately hugs Jiang Chuyao and says 'Life must have been tough for you before!' — the empathy! The warmth! I love this girl. Then there's Shen Hexuan. The handshake scene. 'Once you shake hands, you're mine.' And then he literally picks up Jiang Chuyao on his bike and rides away, leaving Jiang Chuying standing there in the dust. The way he shut down Jiang Chuying's attempts to get a ride — 'No, I have nothing to say to you' — that's not just rejection, that's a statement. He's making his position crystal clear.
