The pacing in these chapters is genuinely impressive. Let me break it down: Chapter 8 starts with a late-night summons, which immediately creates tension. We're in the middle of the night, Luo Fu is being called by Madam Cui, and the reader is already on edge. Then the grandmother scene—this is where the chapter could drag, but it doesn't because every line of dialogue reveals something new. First we learn about the stolen engagement, then Pei Ji's cousin, then Luo Fu's dowry strategy, then the grandmother's回忆 of how Luo Fu handled that maid. It's exposition disguised as conversation, and it moves at a clip. The transition to Luo Zhen waiting in Luo Fu's room is perfectly timed—Luo Fu is exhausted, has been up late, and instead of resting, she's confronted by her sister. The chapter ends on a note of simmering jealousy and the dream sequence, which is a brilliant emotional climax. Then Chapter 9 shifts location entirely to the Pei residence, and we get this whole new scene with Madam Cui visiting. The pacing here is slower, more deliberate—lots of polite conversation, tea-sipping, veiled threats. But the tension never drops because we know what Madam Cui is doing. She's building her case against Luo Fu, and every compliment she pays to Luo Zhen is a dagger aimed at Luo Fu. The transition between chapters works because both scenes share the same emotional core: the women of these families maneuvering for power. The author doesn't give us a breather between chapters, which keeps the reader hooked.
"Because biting myself hurts." This line. This absolutely perfect line. Zhuo Ling bites Xiaohu instead because self-harm is for idiots and she has survived fifty years in an underground city where literally everything was rationed and painful. Of course her first instinct is to make someone else suffer instead of herself. This is trauma response and I am not okay. But then—the tenderness. Oh god, the tenderness. When Chang'an picks her up and she buries herself in his arms, the way the narrative describes her face turning bright red and her body tingling like she's been shocked? That's not just a child's reaction. That's a twenty-year-old woman who has never been touched with kindness experiencing something entirely new. And Chang'an's response—lightly patting her bottom, telling her not to be naughty, rubbing her head—this boy is genuinely gentle. He doesn't treat her like she's broken or less than. He sees her, even when she's drooling on his shoulder and accidentally kissing his collarbone. The most emotionally devastating part for me was the Second Aunt scene. All those women mocking her, calling her a fool, saying she brought disaster to her family, suggesting she should have been drowned in a latrine. And Zhuo Ling's internal response? Not sadness. Not shame. Pure, unadulterated rage. She's already gathered another mouthful of saliva to spit at the woman. This is a character who has been told she's worthless her entire life and she refuses to internalize it. The CP chemistry between these two is already simmering under the surface. It's not explicit—it's in the way he wipes her drool, the way she instinctively snuggles into his chest, the way both of them are playing roles (her pretending to be foolish, him pretending not to notice). I need more. I need it now.
I need to talk about Qi Wuyang because this man is a whole mood and I am HERE for it. Let's trace the arc from Chapter 27 to 34 real quick. He meets Xu Songhe in the snow, she calls him "husband" with this adorable little rabbit nod, and what does he do? He just... walks away. No explanation, no acknowledgment, just disappears into the trees like a ghost. And she's over there thinking, "Winning him over isn't something I can rush." Sir, you don't even know her name and she's already managing expectations like a seasoned rom-com protagonist. Then she gets captured. Chained up. About to be tortured. And when Qi Wuyang finally shows up in that red robe — yes, red robe, of course he wears red — he's not even slightly concerned. The interrogator grabs Xu Songhe by the throat and threatens her, and Qi Wuyang's entire response is the word "Oh." Just "Oh." Xu Songhe's internal monologue is literally: "Wasn't this the part where she was supposed to bravely tell him to leave her behind? Why was it different for her?!" But here's what I think is actually happening — and this is where it gets interesting — Qi Wuyang isn't indifferent. He's just... efficient. He doesn't do dramatic speeches or emotional performances. He sees the threat, he neutralizes it, and it's over before Xu Songhe even finishes her little speech about how she won't let him be implicated. The fact that he saved her at all, despite walking away earlier, suggests he cares in his own weird cold way. And Xu Songhe, bless her heart, is trying so hard to make sense of him through the lens of every novel she's ever read, and it's not working. That gap between her expectations and his actual behavior? That's where the real relationship tension lives.
Could have ‘sworn I left a review, o well my bad. I will write one now. I give this work 5 stars, I believe it deserves it. Hard to find good reads now-a-days but this was definitely a good read thanks for the chapters
The raw emotions in this novel hit hard. It's inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time.
Great character growth and development, absorbing context and really nice novel.
Automatic 5 star... and no, this is not a bot review. It's a real user, just check my profile and you can verify. *No, I was not threatened or kidnapped whatsoever, so please don't accuse the author. I still want to eat a fried drumstick and not some garbage meal.*
nice I didn't expect from the author because of their previous work but the story is ? pretty great
interesting, interesting... although I don't know much about web novelas and this is My first time reading, I think it's acceptable. I like they protagonist because he's very charismatic and he's funny every time his ghost companion interrupts him
Author here, shamelessly self-promoting:This is a transmigrated mates shifter romance. It has werewolf, romance, and adventure moments with reverse harem details.
