Okay so this chapter is basically a masterclass in how to build tension without a single punch being thrown. Let me just say — the plot here is quietly devastating. You've got this multi-generational family drama where the real battlefield is the dinner table, and honestly? I was more invested than in most wuxia fights. The main thread is Father Nie being trapped between his mother's emotional blackmail and his own family's suffering. But what I love is how the author layers in subplots — Nie Qinghe's scheme to get Xiaoli educated, Nie Honghua's firebrand rebellion, Mother Nie's simmering resentment. All of these threads are pulling in different directions, and the reader is literally on the edge of their seat wondering: will Father Nie finally break free, or will he crumble again? The plot twist that hit me hardest? Nie Qinghe revealing she can already write the characters her brother learned. That moment when she scratches them into the dirt and her father is speechless — that's the kind of quiet victory that makes you want to scream. The author doesn't need dramatic reveals; the tension comes from watching a smart daughter strategically dismantle her grandmother's control one conversation at a time. And the pacing? Chef's kiss. The chapter starts with the family confrontation, moves to Father Nie's private reckoning, then ends with Mother Nie's raw monologue. Each section raises the stakes. By the time we're at the end, I genuinely didn't know if Father Nie would finally stand up or just mumble something conciliatory. The author leaves it hanging and I was NOT READY.
What I love about these chapters is how the author doesn't just use the film industry as a backdrop — it's practically a character itself. Every detail about how the system works adds texture and realism. Take the scene where Chi Ying explains why she needs to bring in their upperclassmen: "Anyone with real seniority won't take orders from me. Even if I somehow managed to bring them in, I'd have no idea who would actually be in charge on set." This isn't worldbuilding through exposition dumps — it's woven naturally into Chi Ying's reasoning, and it immediately tells us everything we need to know about the hierarchy and power dynamics in Chinese cinema. Then there's Lu Wei's backstory with the Sichuan Film Studio — the veteran mentor who "taught him practically nothing but constantly criticized everything he did," the demand that Lu Wei apologize, his resignation. This one subplot tells us so much about the old-guard vs. new-generation tension in the industry. And the hierarchy of contempt: "those who made films looked down on television directors, television directors looked down on people who shot music videos, and Lu Wei was only one step away from falling to the very bottom." The dinner scene at the small restaurant near the film academy with the private room and air conditioning — it's such a specific, grounded detail. These are young people who just graduated, celebrating a small victory in a modest setting. It feels lived-in and real, not glamorous or aspirational. That's what makes the worldbuilding work so well.
While reading the first chapter, I perceived the MC as a mischievous spoilt brat, but as I read on, I realized he’s actually sensible and mature for his age which is understandable due to his background. The story progresses quickly, and I was caught off guard by the sudden shift from the third-person narrative to first-person narrative in chapter 4, but I guess that works as well. Overall, the story is very good, and would have readers like me invested in it. Good job, author ?
I like it! The action scenes are amazing and the story building is great. It has potential
The writer has done a very great job.. im really loving this so much! im addicted!!
Hey Author, what did you decide for the mother? ?I have a GREAT SUGGESTION, ?Just make the mc's mother virgin, now there is a question of how she gave birth. Just say the mc's father has a physique which can't get close to women, which was solved after the mc birth after the father improved his cultivation(or not solved if you want). So the mc's mother took three fruits to give birth to the three children(or smth like that)?I'm sure everyone will be satisfied with it.?If you have have already added the mother to the harem, Then PLEASE change the mother character setting when she was introduced. And, if you have not, then please change the character setting and add her to the harem.EVERYONE WILL LOVE THIS SETTING (I think)??Lastly, I LOVE this work of yours. Hope you consider my suggestion.
