Can we just talk about Grandma Mei for a second? Because this woman is absolutely carrying this family on her back and I am HERE for it. The scene where she scolds everyone for having long faces—"Can a living person really be held back by their own urine?!"—is peak Grandma energy. She's not gentle, she's not soft, but she's clearly the strategic brain of the operation. And the moment she shifts attention to Mei Qian and asks "what should we do next?" with that sparkling gaze? Chilling. In the best way. She knows Mei Qian has ideas, even if Mei Qian herself feels like a student suddenly called on by the boss. But what really got me is the family formation during the raid. Look at this: Mei Erhu in front with a machete, Mei Shitou in back with an axe, Madam Jiang and Han Shi behind Mei Qian holding the pole, Madam Jiang protecting her belly with one hand. This is a well-oiled machine. They've been together through transmigration, refugee life, food crises, and now barbarian attacks, and they move as one unit. That's not nothing. The dynamic between Madam Jiang and Mei Qian also deserves mention. When Madam Jiang covers Mei Qian's eyes during the raid and says "Don't look. Hurry, let's go"—that's not just protection, that's a mother who has somehow remained gentle in the roughest circumstances. And earlier, when she adjusts the blanket over sleeping Mei Qian? The author doesn't make a big deal out of it, but it hits hard. Meanwhile, Mei Qian internally panicking while externally trying to look composed? That contrast is everything. She's a transmigrator with a system but absolutely no experience with actual survival, and yet the family trusts her. I'm both worried and invested.
Okay so let me just say this out loud — the moment Lin Sui saw Ma Qiurong standing there with a baby strapped to her back, I literally gasped. This is the woman who, in Lin Sui's previous life, became her mother-in-law, and now she's just... there. A ghost from another timeline, casually existing in the same space. The author did something really clever here by not having Lin Sui react dramatically. She just takes it in, catalogs the scene, and keeps walking. That restraint is so much more powerful than if she'd had some big emotional breakdown. And then there's Gu Shaonan. I keep going back and forth on him. On one hand, he's being a good brother by refusing to kick Gu Yan out, even though his situation is a mess. On the other hand, he's making all these decisions for everyone around him — telling his mother what to cook, deciding his brother's career path, declaring he'll "handle" Gu Yan's relationship problems. The line where he says "She needs to break up with him — right away" felt so confident, so sure of himself, and I immediately thought: you don't know anything, buddy. You think you've got the script, but you're reading from the wrong book. Chen Qinghe is fascinating though. She's not naive at all. When she asks about Gu Yan's husband and then immediately follows up with "What married daughter stays permanently at her parents' home?" — that's a woman who sees the whole picture. She's already calculating who will get squeezed when the family dynamics shift. And her advice about the brother starting a business instead of taking a factory job? That shows she's thinking several moves ahead. I love that she's not just along for the ride — she's actively steering.
There's a thematic parallel between Yao Qingqing and Yao Qian that I can't stop thinking about. Both are women in a society that treats them as commodities. Both have been 'discarded' — Yao Qingqing by Shen Shupei, Yao Qian by her own family's broken engagement. But their responses are completely opposite, and that's where the story gets interesting. Yao Qingqing's line — 'I'm a discarded wife. Public opinion is against me. If I don't work hard, I won't survive' — is the thesis statement of the whole novel. She accepts her position and builds from there. No bitterness, no wallowing. Just action. The loudspeaker she mimics to learn Mandarin is a perfect symbol for this — she's taking the very tool of state propaganda and using it for her own escape. She's learning the language of the powerful so she can navigate beyond the village. Yao Qian, on the other hand, represents the danger of knowing the future but still making selfish choices. Her rebirth should theoretically make her wiser, but instead it makes her more calculating. She's willing to throw Sheng Yunze over like trash and grab a new target. The fact that she's pregnant with Shen Shupei's child and immediately pivots to marrying someone else says everything about her moral compass. She's not trying to change her fate — she's trying to game it. The enamel mug vs. the ceramic award mug detail also struck me. Yao Qingqing gets a large enamel mug as a reward for hosting — practical, durable, useful. Yao Qian is reduced to tears at someone else's doorstep. One woman builds, the other burns.
oh my God this book and the main character are good I recommend reading it
Honestly I've read all the available chapters so far and I am very impressed. The story is quite good and it seems that it will just get better as time goes on. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the chapters.
First three chapters and I'm absolutely hooked. It has been a while since I've read a BL Novel and this serves. ?? The way Docaqui writes magnetizes me to just continue scrolling through the chapters, wishing there were more uploaded chapters. Well — gotta let this marinate for a bit. ✨?
