I need to talk about Concubine Qiu for a second because this character is absolutely devastating in the worst way. She looked at Xue Wanyi — her actual biological daughter — with nothing but venom. And when Xue Mingfei (the stolen child) asked her to show mercy, Concubine Qiu's reaction was pure gratitude. Pure affection. Toward the wrong girl. The scene where Concubine Qiu looks up at Xue Mingfei after she pleads for mercy, and her eyes fill with 'boundless gratitude and affection' — I literally had to pause. That woman would die for Xue Mingfei and never once wonder why her own flesh and blood was being treated like garbage. And Xue Wanyi knows this. She knows it in her bones. That's why she doesn't run from the slap, doesn't dodge when Concubine Qiu chokes her. She's not just playing a game — she's forcing the truth into the open, even if it means bleeding for it. Then there's Zhenzhu and Feicui. These two maids who followed her into hell in her past life and were strangled trying to save her — they're still by her side. 'Miss, what happened?' Feicui asked, horrified at the bruises on her neck. The tenderness in that moment hit me so hard. These are people who would literally die for her again, and she's determined to live in a way that makes their sacrifice mean something this time. And Xue Chong — her 'father' — he kicks Concubine Qiu away and yells 'venomous woman,' but his first concern when looking at Xue Wanyi is whether she caused this trouble by visiting against house arrest. The man doesn't even register that his concubine almost murdered his daughter. He's worried about protocol. That's the kind of emotional neglect that runs deeper than any physical abuse.
I need to talk about the garden scene in Chapter 2 because it's one of those moments that just sticks with you. Zhi Wan under the magnolia tree, picking up petals to make sachets—she loves the fragrance, she does this every year. It's such a quiet, tender moment. You can almost smell the flowers. Spring, butterflies, warm sunshine. It paints this picture of her as someone who finds beauty in small things, someone gentle. And then Lu Xin arrives and CRUSHES those petals under her foot. The contrast is brutal. One second you have this idyllic scene, the next it's destroyed. The author doesn't even need to describe Lu Xin's face being 'filled with malice'—the act of grinding those petals into pulp says everything. It's not just about flowers, is it? Zhi Wan's dignity, her small joys, everything she's trying to hold onto getting stomped on by someone who sees her as beneath them. The Duke's estate itself feels alive too. The servants gossiping behind her back, the beaded curtains separating the inner chamber, Nanny Fang bringing blankets. These details ground the story in a specific time and place without info-dumping. You know exactly what kind of world this is—one where an orphan girl's position is precarious, where every interaction is measured and watched, where a single misstep could cost you everything.
Okay so I need to talk about this reveal because my brain is still spinning. Li Heng connecting Cheung Sha Wan and Sham Shui Po being basically next door to each other? That moment when it all clicked for her — I literally sat up in bed reading this. The whole case had been built on the assumption that Liang Wei saw the skull reconstruction on TV and cracked, but what if he was watching them walk into Zhang Huijing's company instead? That changes EVERYTHING. Think about it. He didn't just confess to take the blame — he confessed to SHIELD Zhang Huijing. All those tears she cried, all that trembling innocence she performed in her statement... Lin Jiacong literally called her a Best Actress candidate. And Old You's joke about flipping the Du Shiniang story — what if Ah Min was the devoted one and Liang Wei the faithless? That line hit me like a truck because it reframes the entire relationship dynamic. The evidence bag scene was also genius storytelling. That childhood photo of the two sisters — one carefree, one quiet and delicate, Zhang Huijing seated because of her legs — it's such a small detail but it tells you everything about their dynamic. Ah Min gave way on EVERYTHING. Food, toys, drinks, even her mother. No wonder she fell for Liang Wei so hard when he was the first person who seemed to choose her. And then there's the hair in the clothing fibers that's too corroded to test, but Xu Le'er casually drops that the powder puff might actually work for DNA preservation. Li Heng immediately pivoting and buying her coffee to get it tested — that's the kind of detail that makes you trust the author. Nothing is wasted here.
This section covers chapters 47 through 54 and honestly the pacing is relentless in the best way. You go from Qiao Yu drawing his sword on a suspicious figure, to Duan Yuyan wiping blood off his face (which by the way is such a small moment but so effective), to the Empress conspiracy reveal, to Qiao Shuang's attack backstory, to the exam results, to the awkward Pei Chi encounter — and it all flows without feeling rushed. The author's secret weapon here is the emotional pivots. Right when you're sitting with the weight of 'Xue Wanwan's death is closely related to the Empress,' you get Qiao Shuang joking about getting stabbed again, and suddenly the tension breaks and you can breathe. Then Song Qingqi's inkstone gift brings it back to warmth. Then the exam results bring excitement. Then Pei Chi's first-place reveal and the Princess Xue'an mention at the end brings a new kind of tension. The chapter transitions are also clean. The shift from the Song residence to the restaurant feels natural because Song Yuejiao is literally calculating the time and going early. There's no jarring cut. And that ending — Pei Chi turning down the Princess and a maid mentioning she heard about his top score — is a perfect mini-cliffhanger. It raises the stakes for the next arc without feeling manufactured.
Let's talk about the stakes here because they're genuinely high even though the surface situation looks like a romantic comedy. Jiang Ranran is trapped in a car with a man the rumors say is a ruthless underworld boss, and she's pretending to be his fiancée to some of the most powerful people in the city. If she fails this act, what happens? She doesn't know exactly, but she's pretty sure Yi Jingnian wouldn't hesitate to silence her. The internal conflict is real—she's terrified but she's also smart enough to adapt and turn her fear into a performance. The external conflicts are multiplying by the scene. Elder Yi is a madman who holds all the power and he's somehow become fascinated with her. Yi Changhai and Xue Wan are desperate to control the situation because their own niece's plans are being ruined. Yi Sichen is missing somewhere and his marriage alliance is falling apart. And through all of this, Yi Jingnian is sitting there with this calm smile, letting chaos unfold while he watches Jiang Ranran perform. The question isn't just whether she'll get kicked out—it's whether she'll survive this family alive. What makes the stakes feel real is that everyone has something to lose. Jiang Ranran has her freedom and possibly her life. Yi Jingnian has his reputation and his plans. Elder Yi has his desire for a grandson who can match his madness. Yi Changhai has his son's future and his wife's family connections. The conflict isn't one-dimensional—it's a web where pulling one thread shakes everything. And the suspense is maintained because we never know which direction this is going to go. Is Elder Yi genuinely accepting her or is he playing a deeper game? Is Yi Jingnian protecting her or using her? Is Jiang Ranran going to get herself kicked out or is she accidentally becoming exactly what this family needs? The author keeps you guessing while making every conflict feel urgent and personal.
This is really artistic, slow pacing but amazing. It's interesting.....
loving it from startI strongly recommend
This is different from Kornet story and og in Rudeus he will try to grow on realistically this story will be short chapters and very slow paced with many slice of life as possible
Semoga bisa terwujud sesuai harapan yang diharapkan serta sebagai inspirasi buat insan lainnya
As a fan, reading this novel for the first time was a huge blow to me - the whole thing is perfect! I'll post 4 chapters every day. Since the first volume is equivalent to Season 1, you can also watch it on Loklok (which has nice quality) or other platforms. Additionally, you can watch Season 2 as an anime, which is why I wanted to rush through the chapters, hehe.WARNING: This is indeed a copy, and the original writer is Rifujin na Magonote.
Happy Writing, I am waiting to finish this story....
I am still writing it. It's my first ever novel. please give it a try and leave a review for any improvement
