"Loose words bring trouble"—a lesson Lord Ying never ceased to teach him. I need to talk about Yi Yao because this kid is carrying half the dialogue in these chapters and doing it brilliantly. His exchange with Mu Shuiqi about the stuffed chicken is peak comic relief: "Want some again next time?" she asked with a sly, forced smile. Yi Yao hesitated. "What are you plotting?" "If you still want to eat the stuffed chicken I buy, then you'd better be polite to me." This is natural, snappy, feels like actual banter between people who've known each other a while. You can hear the voices. Mu Shuiqi is sulky but playful, Yi Yao is wary but hungry, and the power dynamic is constantly shifting. But then there's the Luoying scene where Yi Yao completely drops the ball: "Naturally, to drink wine and admire the snow with the Lord of the Burial Grounds," Yi Yao said with a grin. "Everyone knows Goddess Luoying has long admired him." He says this RIGHT IN FRONT OF MU SHUIQI. And Bingyou has to shut him up with a single glance. The dialogue here does triple duty: it reveals Yi Yao's idolization of Luoying, it informs Mu Shuiqi (and the reader) about Luoying's feelings for Bingyou, and it creates the exact misunderstanding that sends Mu Shuiqi flying home in a huff. And Chou Chou! The snake demon's lines are minimal but perfect. "You two are so childish!" — said right after Yi Yao and Mu Shuiqi are bickering. Then it hides behind Bingyou when both of them roll their eyes at it. The character has maybe six lines across these chapters and yet feels fully realized. Bingyou's dialogue is the most restrained, which is exactly right for his character. He speaks sparingly, and when he does, it carries weight. "You truly wish to go home?" — three words that contain an entire emotional subtext. The author trusts the reader to fill in the blanks. The narrative voice itself is also worth noting. It shifts between close third-person (mostly Mu Shuiqi's perspective) and occasional omniscient commentary. Lines like "When in a foreign land, one always has ties tugging at the heart" feel like the narrator leaning in to whisper something directly to the reader. It's a stylistic choice that creates intimacy without breaking the third-person frame.
