The dialogue in this text is genuinely exceptional, and I want to highlight why. Xu Yifan's voice is the anchor — sarcastic, self-deprecating, internally dramatic but externally restrained. His internal monologue is where the comedy lives: "Having ended up with a master like this, he wasn't sure if it was too late to regret it." And later, when the Sixth Elder bluntly points out that his Qi Refining sixth layer is clearly propped up with pills, Xu Yifan's thought about having a big face but not being thick-skinned? That's a specific, human, funny voice that's entirely his own. The demonic plant's dialogue is distinctively childlike without being annoying about it. "Candy bean!" "I want it, I want it." "I'm going to cultivate. Keep your movements quiet. Don't disturb me." The contrast between its determined declaration and the established fact that it never lasts half a stick of incense is comedy gold, and it's all delivered through dialogue alone. The Sixth Elder is loud, blunt, and emotionally transparent in a way that makes every line memorable. "You hurt my disciple, are you looking to die?" followed immediately by "Chubby boy, come sit up on the platform with me. My stool is big, I'll share half with you." The whiplash between threat and kindness is the character in a single exchange. Even minor characters like Zheng Zhousheng get a line that defines them: "Whoever else I might look down on, I'd never dare look down on your disciple!" The narrative voice itself is wry and observant, never over-explaining, letting the scenes breathe. This is writing that trusts its readers.
Can we just talk about how the author writes food scenes? Because this one is absolutely filthy in the best possible way. "A rich aroma of meat blended with spices wafted out. The meat pieces glistened with a glossy, soy-sauce-red hue; the potatoes, soaked in broth, looked soft, tender, and flavorful. The presentation was absolutely perfect!" And then Lin Yuan's stomach makes a sound. "Gurgle..." The ancient Yushanfang — the imperial kitchen — is apparently so good that a transmigrator from the modern era is completely defeated by it. She's standing in the corner like a human backdrop, forced to watch the emperor eat her favorite dish, and the sensory description is so vivid I could practically taste it. But what makes this scene work isn't just the food description. It's the contrast. You have this incredibly luxurious, almost intimate dinner scene — jade chopsticks, clay pot, the emperor eating slowly and savoring each bite — and then underneath it all is this razor-sharp political tension. Chongzhen is using this meal to test Lin Yuan, to see if she'll slip up. The warmth of the food contrasts with the cold calculation in his eyes. The setting details throughout these chapters also do a lot of heavy lifting. The Qianqingdian — the main hall of the imperial palace — feels real. You can picture the layout: Chongzhen behind his desk, Lin Yuan shrinking in the corner, Bi Ziyan kowtowing on the floor, Han Zhong bursting in with urgent news. The spatial relationships between characters tell you everything about power dynamics without a single exposition dump. And the morning court scene! The author doesn't describe the hall in detail, but the atmosphere is suffocating. Officials throwing accusations at each other, the cloud of mutual slander hanging in the air, Chongzhen sitting high above it all saying nothing. You can feel the weight of centuries of bureaucratic corruption in that single image. The world feels lived-in and real. Not a fantasy backdrop, but a place with its own logic, its own smells and sounds and social codes. The author respects the reader's intelligence enough to let the world speak for itself.
Okay let me just say this chapter is a COMPLETE SETUP and I am HERE for it. We meet Su Ci arriving at her new home—which, spoiler, she doesn't want. Her internal monologue gives Lu Ye a "huge cross mark" because this is the待遇 of a regiment commander? Really? The disappointment is palpable and funny. Then the ambush. The slop bucket. I literally gasped when she dodged it. Not because it was unexpected—the author foreshadows it with the creaking rope sound—but because of HOW she moves. "Her body reacted faster than her thoughts." This woman is not a normal transmigrator. She has skills. Physical skills. And the narration makes sure we notice. The three kids are introduced like a pack of wolves. Lu Xiangbei—the alpha, fierce, territorial. Lu Xiangnan—the timid one who still shows schadenfreude. Lu Xiangdong—the sickly youngest with "a gaze cold like an adult's." Each one distinct, each one a threat, and collectively they're the obstacle Su Ci must overcome. But the real plot move is what happens NEXT. She doesn't fight them. She doesn't plead. She doesn't even argue. She cleans their house, makes their bed, pays them, and then COOKS. The plot here is about DOMINANCE through competence, not through force. And the beautiful thing is—she's not even trying to be nice. She's just... efficient. The kids are side quests in her mission to survive. The chapter ends with the entire island enchanted by her cooking and the kids hypnotized at the kitchen door. This is the calm before something bigger. I can feel it. What happens when they realize she's not leaving? What happens when Lu Ye finally shows up? I NEED to know.
All the best for the author, keep writing.
