This chapter is short — like, really short — but the pacing is absolutely surgical. The author could have padded this with description or internal monologue but instead they chose to do something much smarter. Scene one: the group returns, establishes the Spirit Spring backstory, shows us the dynamic between Yanchu, Xiang Yang, and Yannuo, and plants the question of where Han Qingmo is. Scene two: the post office, the punchline. And the cut between them? Chef's kiss. No transition, no 'meanwhile,' just straight to the phone booth. The structure here is doing so much work. The first scene is warm and domestic — mushrooms, water vats, planning menus for tomorrow. It lulls you into this cozy rhythm and then the second scene absolutely detonates it. That's how you control reader engagement with minimal words. The chapter doesn't drag because every line is either building character dynamics or setting up the twist. And the twist itself comes at the very end, which means the last thing I read before closing the chapter was Han Qingmo's marriage announcement. I immediately opened the next one. That's the pacing.
The stakes in this story just keeps climbing and I am living for it. On the surface level, Xiao Changning's personal stakes are devastating. She wanted freedom — "free as the sky and sea" — and instead she's trapped in a palace with a man who won't let her have children, surrounded by women who want her dead, and she just watched her only friend die because of her. Ali's last words were literally about how Xiao Changning would have been free if not for her. The guilt is going to eat her alive. But the political stakes are just as dangerous. The court officials are submitting impeachment memorials by the boatload. General Helian Jue is specifically called out as "particularly resentful and defiant" — this is a military man who lost cities and prisoners because of Xiao Changning, and he's not happy about it. The Emperor released prisoners and cities just to bring her back, and the entire bureaucracy is furious. This isn't just palace drama, this is potentially treason-level discontent. Murong Yao's conflict is the most interesting though. He's the Emperor — technically the most powerful person in the story — but he's clearly fighting battles on multiple fronts. He needs Xiao Changning (why? we still don't fully know), he needs to keep the court from revolting, he needs the Empress to help him manage everything secretly, and he's actively preventing the one thing that would secure her position (a child). What is he protecting her from? Or what is he protecting himself from? The assassination attempt raises the stakes to life-or-death immediately. These weren't random attackers — they were sent specifically for Xiao Changning, and they were willing to kill her in broad daylight during a carriage journey. The fact that the assassins all committed suicide rather than talk means someone with real power ordered this hit, and that someone is still out there. And underneath everything, there's Xiao Changning's internal conflict — she keeps saying "this is my fate as a princess" and forgiving people who betrayed her, but how long can she keep absorbing betrayal before it breaks her? Ali's death wasn't just a plot point, it was the first crack in her endless pattern of trusting the wrong people and getting hurt. What happens when she stops forgiving?
The author just drags the story, but overall, it's good. I usually wait for chapters to pile before reading. Otherwise, you get frustrated by the decisions mc makes. So if you are as inpatient as me , i recommend waiting for the chapters to stack then binge.
This is a solid foundation for a gripping fantasy tale. With careful attention to character development, thematic exploration, and originality, your story has the potential to resonate with audiences, keep going.
This novel is absolutely hilarious, protagonists are so boring compared to the arrogant villians too. Bai zihan is such a funny young master lmao. A pity only 22 chapters are out
I think I read this 2–3 years ago with free reading
to be honest , l just read few chapters, and it's quite alright , the character design is ok only repeated words but the rest is fine .
such a great love story with so many turns.
surprisingly pretty good. story flows decently well, characters feel like they have their own personality and it's interesting enough. also love the fact the privilege chapter prices are what they are. as most stories charge 50$ for 25 chapters which are only 1k words. the fact you get 50 for 10 is what i think all privilege prices should be. Keep it up author
A beautifully crafted novel with rich characters, deep emotions❤️u200d?, and unexpected twists that keep you hooked.
Thanks for all the translation and hardwork! One of the best novel with great character and story development. Very different from other isekai series, this feels very original
i love raye's character, and the plot is really interesting :3 i can't wait to see how the story will develop in the future.
