Okay so this identity swap is genuinely one of the cleverest plot devices I've seen in a while. Let me just say it: two girls, both trapped, both desperate, and they come up with this plan where they literally become each other. Ming Niansheng has to go to the capital because the Old Marchioness ordered it, but she's terrified of her father—the Marquis who got her mother drunk and impregnated her. She's basically a living stain in that household. Meanwhile Luo Xinci is being systematically destroyed at home: her mother poisoned, her uncle crippled, her cousin framed. And she needs to go to the capital to investigate but has zero connections there. The swap solves both problems in one move. Ming Niansheng escapes her father. Luo Xinci gets the Marquis's protection. But here's what got me—this isn't some clean, risk-free plan. As the text literally says: "if even one step went awry, both Luo Xinci and Ming Niansheng would be condemned as criminals." They both know this. They both hesitate. And yet they do it anyway. Then there's the political layer underneath everything. Zhou Lin is worried about the Marquis's relationship with the Emperor. The Marquis's health is failing. The Old Marchioness is sending Ming Niansheng as a pawn to show filial piety. Is the Emperor going to strike while the Marquis is weak? This subplot is barely hinted at but it's there, lurking like a storm cloud. And Steward Tang! He showed up right as they entered the capital, the one person who'd actually seen Ming Niansheng four years ago. That scene where Luo Xinci deliberately lets her jade bangles glint in Steward Tang's direction? Chef's kiss. She remembered every detail—the twenty bolts of brocade, the Silla hair ornaments, everything. The author is setting up this incredibly tense cat-and-mouse game. I'm also dying to know who's behind the attacks on the Luo family. The drunk thug who boasted about acting on orders from a "powerful noble in the capital"—then died of a mysterious illness? That's not coincidence. That's someone silencing loose ends. And the fact that Luo Xinci is the only one left untouched? That's either because she was overlooked or because the enemy is saving her for last. Either way, I need to know what happens next.
Let's talk about what these characters are actually risking, because it's not just some generic "good vs evil" setup. It's layered and personal and it makes every conflict hit different. Su Zhisheng's adoptive mother just had surgery. Her recovery depends on follow-up care, which depends on money. Xing Tianwei gives him ten thousand yuan, but also needs his adoptive mother to cooperate on an old cold case investigation. So suddenly her health isn't just a personal matter — it's tied to a police investigation. The stakes are personal AND professional, and Su Zhisheng is caught in the middle of both. Then there's Gao Lijian. He's almost scammed into a plastic surgery trap that could ruin his life financially and physically. The interviewer is literally selling false hope — "you could make it in the entertainment industry" — while running a operation that leaves people rotting in basements. The stakes here are life and death, and Su Zhisheng has to act fast without revealing how he knows what he knows. The fake young master situation is a slow-burn conflict. Su Zhisheng isn't in immediate danger, but the longer he stays silent, the more the web of lies grows. And the engagement banquet recruitment? It's clearly connected to the Su family's darker side. Mrs. Su runs a beauty salon that's apparently involved in something criminal. The stakes are expanding outward like ripples. What I find most compelling is that Su Zhisheng isn't just fighting external threats — he's also managing his own identity. He can't reveal he's connected to the Su family. He can't reveal he can hear animals. He has to solve problems while staying hidden, which means every decision carries the risk of exposure. That's a different kind of tension, and the author handles it really well. The reader knows more than the characters in the story, which creates dramatic irony that keeps you leaning forward.
I need to talk about how well-written the dialogue is, especially Yang Muqing's lines. This girl is a walking red flag and her speech patterns prove it. "Pick it up. What else can you do when your family is so poor?" That's not just mean—that's calculated. She's trying to break Su Jinle's spirit, not just win an argument. And then: "With one word from me, Gu Jingxiu won't marry you. When the time comes, even if you beg me and give me the dress for free, it'll be useless!" She's threatening Su Jinle's future happiness while also revealing her own insecurity. She's so afraid of losing Gu Jingxiu that she'll destroy anyone who gets close to him. Meanwhile, Su Jinle's dialogue is perfect—short, halting, but with moments of surprising strength. When she finally says "No," without stuttering, it's a character moment. And her response to Yang Muqing's thousand yuan demand? "A thousand. Do you want it?" She's calling the bluff! The dialogue between these two is like watching a chess match where one player keeps cheating but the other is learning the rules. And Old Zhou's warning to Su Weihua—"Don't go looking for trouble either"—shows the generational difference. The older generation knows how to swallow pride to survive. But Su Jinle? She's not that generation. Her dialogue shows she's ready to fight.
'I just don't want to be with Pei Yuhuan anymore.' Say that sentence out loud. Just say it. Do you hear what just happened? A woman who was supposedly in a relationship with one brother announces to the other brother's car that she's done with him. And she says it while looking directly into Pei Yuexuan's eyes, with that sly smile, like she's handing him a bomb and watching him decide whether to defuse it or let it explode. The stakes here are enormous and the author never lets us forget it. What does Xia Zhi stand to lose? Her social standing if the Pei family finds out she's playing both brothers. Her friendship with Pei Yuhuan, who clearly still wants her. Her own sense of identity—she's been 'Rere' to both of them for years, the pampered girl who belongs to the younger brother. Who is she now? What does Pei Yuexuan stand to lose? Everything. If he moves too fast, he becomes the brother who stole his sibling's girlfriend. If he moves too slow, she realizes he's been waiting and decides he's too cautious to trust. The entire Pei family dynamic hangs on this single conversation in a car that won't even stop moving. And the internal conflict! Pei Yuexuan wants to ask 'Did he bully you?' but he also wants to ask 'Did last night change something between us?' He can't ask either question. He's trapped between his brother and the woman he loves, and the only thing he can do is open the car door for her and carry her upstairs like a medieval knight who's never held a lady before. The suspense isn't about whether they'll end up together. It's about whether Pei Yuexuan will ever find the courage to say what he's been thinking for five years, or whether Xia Zhi will keep testing him until he breaks. I need the next chapter. Now.

Here is my review about this novel:Worldbuilding; The worldbuilding is so far quite alright, especially with the system and its the mechanic that is quite interesting. Overall, its fine and has a potential to be explore more.Characters: Frank Gunn is indeed one of the most entertaining main characters with his sarcastic remark and his eagerness to fight the monsters. Furthermore, his relationship with his daughter is a strong point in this story as the author quite showed their closed bond with each others. As for other sides characters, so far they alright for now.Plot: I like the author show quite a lot of fast pace action to make it book more engaging to read. I also like the plot for the story is also quite smooth too.Overall, if you like system novel, I recommend to read this book.
