A son of the prominent Yang family in Yangshu Village. He was well-known for his virtue and understanding, good-looking, and could read and embroider having studied at his maternal grandparents' house. He was originally engaged to Song Tingzhou but secretly went to his maternal grandparents' home in Guyang County and married into his cousin's family instead.
