Okay so let me just say this: the opening of this arc is a masterclass in misdirection. Lu Shijia walks in thinking he's being set up with some desperate girl trying to climb the social ladder, and the reader thinks the same thing—until Xu Nianchu drops the "she's my stepsister" bomb. I literally sat up straighter. The whole scene where she calmly explains the impersonation plot while everyone else is fuming is so well-paced. You've got the son being outraged, the grandfather being protective, the mother-in-law being subtly poisonous, and Xu Nianchu just sitting there like a cool cucumber while the chaos unfolds around her. But the real plot twist isn't the stepsister reveal—it's Xu Nianchu's decision. Instead of playing the victim and begging for rescue, she asks for a job. "I want to enlist in the military." Not as a doctor, not as a wife, but as a cultural performance soldier. This is such a smart narrative move because it immediately reframes the entire story. She's not a damsel, she's a protagonist with agency. And the fact that she already knows ballet? That's the kind of detail that makes you go back and re-read earlier chapters wondering what else you missed. Then there's the Wu Chi subplot that hits like a freight train when she gets home. Her father trying to sell her to his boss? That's not just conflict for conflict's sake—that's the kind of horror that makes you genuinely furious on her behalf. And the slap? Smack! Right when Xu Xunle walks in? Perfect timing. The author knows exactly how to stack revelations so each one lands harder than the last.
Let me just say this upfront: the tension in this section is ABSOLUTELY ELECTRIC. Every single scene feels like a powder keg waiting to explode, and the author knows exactly how to light the fuse. Let's start with the biggest conflict: the main Chen family versus the branch Chen family. This isn't just a family dispute — it's a power struggle over resources, territory, and survival. The main family has been "bossing around" the branch family's disciples the entire journey, and now they've arrived at the main family's territory where the power imbalance is even more stark. But the main family's response to Chen Miaomiao's arrival is fascinating. Instead of confronting her directly, they try a 'beauty trap' — sending handsome young disciples to distract and potentially corrupt her. This is such a clever conflict resolution attempt because it's indirect, deniable, and culturally sophisticated. The main family doesn't want to fight; they want to neutralize the threat through manipulation. Chen Wen sees through this immediately: "Chen Wen naturally could as well. In his heart, he cursed the main family's shamelessness—how could they stoop so low as to offer their own disciples?" But here's where the stakes escalate dramatically. Chen Wen has to make a choice: protect his alliance with Chen Miaomiao or save his trump cards for later. When he produces the Grade 4 Jieying Pill, he's investing his most valuable asset into this relationship. And when he produces the Grade 5 pill with Danxiang? He's going ALL IN. The internal conflict within Chen Wen is agonizing to watch. He knows the Grade 5 pill is his ultimate trump card — "If he took it out, what would he do if he needed it in the future?" — but he also knows that if he doesn't produce something impressive, Chen Miaomiao might be lured away by the main family's gifts. The scene where Chen Miaomiao is visibly tempted by the brocade boxes of treasures, and Chen Wen has to race to produce another pill before she accepts, is pure anxiety-inducing drama. And then there's the public dimension of this conflict. The citizens of Fancheng are watching EVERYTHING. When Chen Miaomiao reveals Chen Wei is still unconscious from her "light tap," the crowd erupts: "Heavens, isn't Hall Master Chen Wei a Jindan Xiushi?!" "She… she… this esteemed person just said she gave him a light tap…" "Wait, is the gap between Yuanying and Jindan really that vast?!" This public spectacle raises the stakes enormously. This isn't just a private family dispute anymore — it's a performance, and everyone in Fancheng is the audience. The main family's reputation is on the line, Chen Miaomiao's power is being displayed for all to see, and Chen Wen's alchemy skills are being evaluated by the entire cultivation community. The cliffhanger ending — with the Grade 5 pill's Danxiang causing everyone to stare at Chen Miaomiao, waiting for her reaction — is the perfect tension builder. We know the main family is desperate, we know Chen Wen is sweating, we know Chen Miaomiao is calculating, and we have NO IDEA what she'll do next.
Let me just say — this pacing is relentless and I am here for it. Chapter 3 is basically one long shopping montage. Three days, non-stop buying, and the author doesn't let up for a single breath. It's exhausting just reading about it. And that's the point, right? We're supposed to feel the urgency. Three days. Two million yuan (if you count things she can't actually sell). A list that never ends. The credit card maxing out. The System offering to help with a mortgage loan and then immediately refusing when it senses she's about to ask for something illegal. This chapter is a masterclass in building momentum through accumulation. Then Chapter 4 — BAM. Body transmigration. Hospital. Murder attempt. Within the first few paragraphs of the new chapter, someone is trying to kill her. The pacing shift is jarring in the best way. One moment she's happily buying birthday cakes ('Once she arrived, she could eat one cake a year for the rest of her life') and the next she's fighting for her life in a 1960s hospital ward. The structure here is smart because it gives us a breathing room (the shopping) before slamming us into danger. If the murder attempt had come immediately after binding, we'd be in constant high-tension mode and it would be exhausting. Instead, we get the satisfaction of watching her prepare, stock up, and feel like she's ready — only to have reality hit her the moment she arrives. The chapter ends on a cliffhanger of sorts — not a literal one, but the prescription handoff to the elderly woman. She's building social capital, creating allies, and we're left wondering what happens next. The author knows exactly when to pause and when to accelerate.
Highly recommend this is first time reading a novel based on cultivation and I wasn't disappointed I really love it can't wait for more chapters to be uploaded
