It's cozy. It's warm. It could have dragged, but it doesn't, and I think that's because every beat serves the character development. The food isn't just food; it's Su Yin's way of earning her place. The pastries aren't just gifts; they're bridges to the royal family. Even the queen getting hungry is a pacing device that keeps the royal subplot alive without needing a full scene. Then Chapter 7 hits like a truck. One moment Su Yin is happily cooking, the next she's being confronted by Yu Youqin in broad daylight with a whole forum drama behind her. The escalation is sudden but not unearned—the author spent time establishing that people are watching Lu Xingcun and that Su Yin's background has been uncovered. So when the confrontation comes, it feels inevitable rather than random. What I love is how the chapter handles the aftermath. Instead of lingering on the conflict, it pivots to the family moment with Zhou Xianghan, then to Lu Xingcun's internal panic about being excluded from dinner invitations. The tension releases into humor, which keeps the reader from feeling drained. And then Chapter 8 opens with Lu Xingcun being summoned by his father—the king himself—and suddenly we're back in political territory with Su Yin's research being discussed at the highest level. The pacing rhythm here is: domestic warmth → sudden conflict → emotional resolution → political intrigue. It's a rollercoaster and I'm here for it. Every chapter ends with a hook that makes you want to keep going, whether it's Lu Xingcun's confusion about his aunt's new favorite person or the king revealing that Su Yin's research is already in production.
