I'm going to start with this line and just build from there: "Is this for me or for my Qiqi?" Bai Yuwei asking that about Si Jingzhan's gift is such a perfect character moment in eight words. You can hear his voice—slightly competitive, deeply affectionate, unguarded. And Si Jingzhan's response? He just shifts the gift toward Bai Yuwei. No explanation, no drama. That's Si Jingzhan in a nutshell: cold, efficient, but not rude. The dialogue here never feels like the author is using characters as mouthpieces for exposition. Even the system interactions are handled well. When Shen Qi asks "Xiao Yu, where are the specific locations of these herbs?" it's a practical question that moves the plot without feeling forced. But my favorite dialogue moment has to be the entire exchange between Shen Qi and Bai Yuwei about her going out alone. She says: "I know you're hunting, and the food I eat is all brought back by you. But I can also hunt prey, kill them, and help share the burden with you." That's not just dialogue—that's a character statement. She's asserting her independence while also offering partnership. And Bai Yuwei's response, proposing they hunt together, shows he heard her. He didn't dismiss it, he didn't patronize her, he found a middle ground. The narrative voice also deserves mention. It's third-person limited, mostly following Shen Qi, but it dips into Si Jingzhan's head during his discovery scene and you can feel the shift in tone—more contemplative, more uncertain. The author's voice is confident enough to let silence do work too. Like when Si Jingzhan just stands there after Shen Qi leaves, "pondered something for so long" that he forgets his original purpose. No internal monologue spilling out, just the narration telling us he lingered. Sometimes saying less is saying more.
There are three symbols in these chapters that keep coming back to me, and they're all about power and control. First: the shadows. Jiang Ning deliberately stomping on Gu Jianshen's shadow as they walk back at night — it's such a small, almost childish act of defiance, but it's everything. She can't fight him, she can't run from him, she can't even cry properly because he tells her to stop. But she can step on his shadow. It's the only power she has in that moment, and the author lets it speak for itself without any commentary. Second: the plaque. 'Zhenbei General's Mansion' to 'Zhang Residence.' This isn't just set dressing — it's a visual representation of how power shifts in this world. Names on wood boards. People rise, people fall, and the gate above the entrance changes to reflect who currently holds the leash. Jiang Ning's intuition that it will change again shows she understands the game even if she's not playing it willingly. And third: the jade pendant. Cold Winter pulling out that pendant — the first New Year gift Jiang Ning ever gave to Little Stone — is chilling. It's not just a threat; it's a reminder that everything she cares about is someone else's leverage. That pendant represents her connection to her family, and now it's being used to chain her to this estate, to this arrangement, to a life she didn't choose. The recurring motif of the 'Cold Winter' character — both the person and the seasonal element — is interesting too. The wind that sneaks through the window at night, the man who brings threats in winter. Coldness as a constant presence in Jiang Ning's life. What is this story really about, beneath the surface? I think it's about who gets to write the names on the plaques — who gets to decide whose life matters and whose doesn't.
I need to talk about the emotional whiplash of this opening because it is REAL. We go from confusion and fear to pure, unadulterated rage in about three paragraphs. Xu Nian wakes up, doesn't know where she is, someone's touching her against her will, and her first instinct is to SLAP them. Not a timid push-away, not a plea for help—she just swings and this woman nearly falls over. That's not panic. That's pure fight-or-flight and she chose FIGHT. And then the memory flood hits and suddenly she understands everything. The betrayal she's feeling isn't just about the abortion attempt—it's about the original Xu Nian's choices. She was in love with Xiao Chen, the soldier, and she DRUGGED him. Then she cheated on him. And now this man named Qian Wenyuan is trying to convince her to get rid of his child. The emotional complexity here is insane. But the moment that absolutely wrecked me was when she's running away, bleeding from her lip, vision blurring, and she thinks: "If only my medicinal space had come with me..." And it did. The relief in that moment—it's not just physical relief, it's the relief of someone who has lost everything and then finds out she still has something. She was alone in her previous life, no family, no one. And now she has a family that will run toward her voice in the dark. The scene where she collapses in her medicinal space and drinks the Spirit Spring water—it's such a quiet, intimate moment after all that chaos. She's lying on soft grass under a brilliant blue sky that exists only for her. After everything, she still has this sanctuary. And then she steps back out into the real world, stronger, ready. I'm already emotionally invested in this woman and we've only read four chapters.
This is propably first time where although most chapters are just talking i am not feeling bored and i am excited how will it progress. My english is bad so i can't be sure but i did not noticed any grammar mistakes. 2 MC are really nice and i started to like them very fast. Only thing thats preventing me from giving 5 star is that author stopped updating? I want to know how will happen and how will it continue! =(
Here is my review of The Fool AscensionWorldbuilding: The worldbuilding of this world for me is quite okay as the set up with the heart of ruin and the effect to the rest of the world. I also like there are group of assassins that related with the heart of ruin. My feedback for this, to give more detail description regarding the world itself to make it more fleshed out.Characters: So far the characters are fines and I quite like the dynamic too in here. The main character, Jarek is witty with his delivery. Lena is mysterious and love to give a good roast. Their dynamic between each others so far are interesting and fun to follow. As for other characters, they are okay for now, just needed to be fleshed it out.Writing: I like the writing is quite fast pace, but fine to follow. The action is so far nice too.Overall, if you like action, fantasy, and heist, I definitely recommend this novel.
