Okay so I need to sit with this for a minute because the reveal at the end of Chapter 2 is genuinely one of those moments where everything clicks into place. Jiang Ning has been having these recurring dream encounters with a faceless man—her 'Dream Man'—and she's been burning joss paper to try to get rid of him. Meanwhile, Gu Jianshen has been secretly meeting a woman in his dreams and finding gold in his blanket upon waking. The fairy who leaves him gold... is Jiang Ning. They've been sharing the same dream space the entire time without knowing it. This recontextualizes everything. Jiang Ning's fear of Gu Jianshen isn't just about him being a terrifying general—it's layered with this weird subconscious familiarity. She's spent nights physically intimate with this man in her dreams, even if she can't see his face. And he? He's been calling her his lucky star, his fairy. The irony is delicious. She's terrified of the man whose face she's never seen clearly, and he's been secretly grateful to the woman he's now about to interrogate. The fake rough man's performance was also fascinating. Gu Jianshen hid behind him to observe Jiang Ning's reaction without revealing himself. That's a man who doesn't trust easily, who watches before he acts. But here's what got me—the moment he saw her crying, he felt 'an inexplicable tightness in his chest.' That's not the reaction of a stranger. That's the reaction of someone who already knows her on a level he can't explain.

"I'm not going to answer that until I hear her voice. What if you're actually a thief?"
