Let me just say—the atmosphere in this book is INSANE. The opening scene with the snow outside and the warmth inside? The shadows on the marble floor rising and falling like spies? I literally felt like I was watching a movie. The author has this gift for making you feel like you're standing right there in that hundred-square-meter bedroom. And the sunroom! A bird's nest-shaped structure made entirely of tempered Low-E glass, over two hundred square meters, with plants from all over the world and an annual maintenance cost in the tens of millions? This isn't just worldbuilding—it's a statement. We're in the world of extreme wealth, where even the sunlight is expensive. But what really got me was the contrast. The cold snow outside versus the heat inside. The warm orange glow of the nightlight versus the blinding diamond brilliance of the sunroom. Gu Anyun in her white lace nightgown covered in marks versus her icy, composed exterior. The Australian waxflower blooming bravely against the frost while the other plants are sheltered and pampered inside. Every scene is layered with visual tension. There's this one moment in Chapter 2 where Nan Qiu shields Gu Anyun's eyes from the sunlight as she wakes up—that small gesture of care in such a cold, opulent house? That's the kind of detail that makes the world feel alive. This isn't just a mansion; it's a character itself.
I keep thinking about the fish bones. Sun Xiuhe stuffs the whole fish tail into her mouth, gets bones stuck, and can't even spit out the meat because she's too greedy. Meanwhile, Song Zhaodi and her family eat several large mouthfuls in succession. The image of the grandmother choking on bones while watching others enjoy the meal is almost poetic. Food is the central symbol here, and it represents everything: power, control, survival, love, and betrayal. The grandmother controls the food distribution as a way to maintain authority. When Song Zhaodi redistributes the fish, she's not just sharing a meal—she's redistributing power within the family. The fish becomes a symbol of resistance. Water celery is another interesting symbol. It's wild, untamed, unfamiliar. Sun Xiuhe immediately suspects it's poisonous, referencing a death in the next village. But Song Dachuan tries it and loves it. The water celery represents the new—everything that Song Zhaodi brings into this family is unfamiliar and threatening to the old order, but ultimately nourishing. The broken leg is a symbol too. Song Yaodong can't walk, can't work as hard, can't protect his family the way he wants to. It's a physical manifestation of the family's vulnerability. And the medicine costing thirty coins a day for a hundred days? That's 3,000 coins total. The family is essentially being bled dry by illness and poverty, and the grandmother sees this as an inconvenience rather than a tragedy. But the deepest symbol might be the money pouch. Song Zhaodi clutching it at her waist as she approaches her parents' room—that small pouch represents her agency, her ability to provide, her secret power in a world where she has almost none. When she reveals 185 coins, it's not just money. It's proof that she can survive without the grandmother's permission, without the family's approval. She has something they don't: independence.
Can we talk about how Qin Ya describes Shi Jianchuan like he's some kind of divine creation? "The only downside is he won't let me touch him." She's literally pining for her own husband and has NO IDEA. Meanwhile he's sitting there watching her gush about how perfect he is while carrying this weight of knowing their entire history. The scene where she signs her painting and can't even recognize her own signature—that's not just amnesia, that's the death of her old self. And Shi Jianchuan? He's the one who's actually changed. He used to be the controlling husband she fled from. Now he's the one begging internally. "At first I just wanted to stay by Ya Ya's side. Then I wanted her to like me, to love me..." That's not a stalker, that's a man who lost everything and is trying to rebuild it from scratch. But the power dynamic is STILL off. He controls the money, the house, the narrative. She's grateful for two thousand yuan pocket money like it's a miracle. The red wine scene—she gets drunk and he loses control. Is that love or is that possession? I can't tell anymore and that's what makes this relationship so intoxicating to read.
