I want to talk about how the author handles the transition from night to morning because this is textbook-level pacing control. The chapter starts with Pei Xu on that bamboo couch, trying to sleep, failing, opening the window, having this vivid dream. The dream sequence itself is beautifully structured—it mirrors their actual night together but amplifies it. The temple, the rain, the purple lightning, her saying "I'm scared" and pressing against him, his voice going hoarse asking "Like this... do you feel at ease?" It's almost too on-the-nose, but that's the point. It's a DREAM. His subconscious is processing everything. Then—cut to morning. Birds singing. Hazy light through the bed curtains. Sang Wu waking up slowly, remembering what happened, smiling to herself. The pacing here is deliberately slow, almost lazy, like you're waking up with her. And then—Li Yan in the bamboo grove. This is where the author gets really clever. Instead of going straight back to the main couple, we get this whole scene with Li Yan watching Pei Xu practice swordplay at an uncharacteristically aggressive pace. The sharpness in his sword, the restrained fury, it tells us everything about Pei Xu's mental state without a single internal monologue. Two ke of practice, never exceeding by more than a cup of tea's duration. Self-discipline cracking at the edges but still holding. Then—Sang Wu appears. In her sleeping robe. At dawn. The timing is everything. She catches him mid-rut, so to speak, and the awkwardness between them is palpable. The author could have rushed this, had them immediately talk about the pear soup or the night before, but instead we get this slow, uncomfortable dance. She reaches up to wipe his face, he flinches away like she's burning him. And then the breakfast scene, where the tension finally explodes into dialogue. The pacing from dream to sword practice to awkward greeting to breakfast revelation is just... chef's kiss. Every beat lands exactly where it should.
Can we talk about how Gu Cheng'an speaks versus how everyone else speaks? The author has given him this razor-sharp, clipped dialogue style that's instantly recognizable. "Decided to come back, did you?" — that's it. No greeting. No warmth. Just a sneer wrapped in seven words. "Li Shengxia, have you forgotten you're a married woman?" — the way he weaponizes her own status against her. He's not saying it because he cares about the marriage. He's saying it because her independence irritates him. And then the masterclass: "Put it wherever you like." Four words after she's just spent hours retrieving his precious orchid, apologizing to Shen Jingze, handing back twenty million. That's not indifference. That's contempt dressed as casualness. Compare that to Shen Jingze's dialogue — soft, accommodating, almost painfully gentle. "If you're short on money, you don't have to return it right away." He offers her an out. Gu Cheng'an offers her a trap. The contrast is brutal and the author doesn't even need to narrate it. Sheng Xia's voice is the most interesting one though. She starts each confrontation trying to reason, trying to be reasonable, trying to negotiate. "How about this? You've given me plenty of birthday gifts too." She's bargaining with someone who doesn't play fair. But then she has these moments — "Take back the gifts you gave me, and I'll take back the one I gave you. That way, we'll be even" — and you can hear the desperation underneath the boldness. She's not actually confident. She's just tired of being a doormat. Her parents' dialogue is also doing great work. Her father's quick denial about the money, the forced smile, the immediate pivot to complaining to "the old master" — it's a portrait of a man who knows he's in the wrong but can't stop himself from taking the advantage. And her mother's line "Our Xia Xia is so beautiful. What's wrong with marrying him?" — that's the voice of someone who still doesn't understand the danger they're in. The hot pot scene with Su Qiao is a nice breather too. Casual, warm, normal friendship dialogue after all that tension. It reminds us that Sheng Xia has a life outside this marriage, even if she's slowly losing it.
The stakes in this book keep escalating in ways that genuinely worry me, and I love it. On the surface level, there's the immediate physical danger - Ruan Qingli nearly being assaulted by Master Li, the drug in her system, the helplessness of being trapped in that carriage. Han Sheng finding her and losing his temper, Su Mingyuan having to physically restrain him? That scene made my hands shake. The stakes are literally life and death, and the author makes you feel every second of it. But the deeper stakes are what really got me. Han Sheng's internal conflict about his future is devastating. He knows war is coming. The Di tribes are circling like wolves. He's a man who might not come home alive, and he's already pushing Ruan Qingli away because he doesn't want to drag her into that uncertainty. "All she wanted was to live a peaceful and happy life. Why should he drag her into the chaos of his own uncertain future?" That's the real conflict here. Not just the external threats of dangerous men and impending war, but the internal battle between two people who clearly care about each other and the circumstances that keep pulling them apart. Ruan Qingli wanting to help him by finding someone else to marry, Han Sheng pretending he doesn't want her close - the dramatic irony is absolutely killing me. And the stakes keep rising. Every chapter adds a new layer of danger or emotional complexity. The Fang family subplot isn't resolved. The war threat is still looming. And these two characters are still dancing around what they actually feel for each other. I'm completely invested and genuinely anxious about what's going to happen next.

Reading the first 20 chapters of this book, I must say I am really impressed. How you are able to describe the moment of peace and friendship between them, although a bit too complicated, is what has me on edge. Thus, the reason for my rating!?Keep writing!
