I've been thinking about this book more than I probably should, and there's something deeper going on beneath the farming and shopping surface. The space itself — it started small and keeps growing. "When crops mature, the space would expand." This isn't just a convenient plot device. It's a metaphor for self-sufficiency, for building something from nothing. Every crop she plants, every seed she saves, every expansion of that space represents her taking control of her own life. She's not dependent on anyone. The mountains, the dogs, the space — it's her entire world and she's building it brick by brick. Then there's the disguise. She dresses as a servant, puts soot on her face to hide her beauty. "From a distance, it looked like a large dark birthmark." Why does she do this? Because the world outside her mountain isn't safe for someone like her. The disguise is both protection and commentary — she has to erase herself to survive in society. But inside the space, she doesn't need to hide. She can just be Gu Shiyi. And the bamboo rats — caught by dogs, sold for silver, used to buy seeds and supplies. It's this beautiful cycle of giving and receiving. The dogs hunt, she sells, she invests back into the future. There's a theme here about interdependence and smart resource management that I think a lot of readers glide right past. The salt detail hit me too. "In the deep mountains, even without grain, she wouldn't starve... But salt was different." Salt as a symbol of civilization, of connection to the outside world, of the thin line between survival and thriving. She could survive alone in the mountains, but salt pulls her back to town, back to society, back to the cycle of trade and exchange.
The stakes in these chapters are absolutely terrifying because they're so SLOW-BURN. There's no sword fight, no dramatic confrontation — just a girl drinking poisoned soup and a guy watching from the shadows, and somehow that's MORE stressful than any action scene. Let's break down what's actually at stake here, because it's a LOT: Xue Yao's life — he's already been stabbed, ambushed, left for dead. One more dose of whatever Liu Jin is brewing and he might not wake up. But worse than death is capture. Pei Di wants intel, and Xue Yao knows it. He's playing a dangerous game of 'wait and watch' from a bed he can barely trust. Lu Dantao's life — she's completely unaware she's in danger, which makes her stakes even higher. She's walking into a trap with a smile on her face. The author makes us FEEL this dramatically ironic tension with every cheerful line she delivers. 'Perfect timing, come drink some soup.' THE SUSPICION. The Hu Ge'er hostage — Liu Jin mentions this casually but it changes EVERYTHING. Someone important is being held by Lord Huang, and Liu Jin is negotiating from a position of supposed weakness. This means the power dynamics are even more tangled than we thought. And the mysterious person from the capital — twenty years old, noble bearing, accompanied by a childhood sweetheart. Liu Jin thinks Xue Yao might BE this person. If he is, then Pei Di's entire scheme just got a whole lot more complicated. If he's NOT, then Lu Dantao is just a random girl who got swept into something way above her pay grade. The scene where Xue Yao confirms Lu Dantao is truly unconscious? That's peak tension. He's checking her pulse, pinching her jaw, looking for any sign of deception. And finding none. 'She was also a pitiful fool.' But there's something else in that moment — hesitation. He could hurt her right now. He has the opportunity. And he doesn't. Why? That unanswered question is what's going to keep me up at night.

I really enjoyed The story is , emotional, and the characters are well-developed. The world-building is but overall, it was a great read.I especially liked [favorite part of the book], though I feel like mention a minor issue if any could be improved. Still, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys . Looking forward to more!
Masterpiece. This novel is a true literary gem that captivates from the very first pages and leaves a lasting impression. The author masterfully creates an immersive atmosphere, bringing the characters to life and drawing the reader into their world. Each scene is rich with emotion, and the writing is vivid and expressive, making the reading experience truly engaging. The plot unfolds smoothly yet keeps you intrigued, prompting deep reflection on important life themes. The characters feel real, with their joys, doubts, and inner struggles. They don’t just exist on the pages—they step out of the book and become close to the reader. This novel is both inspiring and thought-provoking, leaving a warm and lasting impression. It’s one of those stories you’ll want to return to, just to relive the magic the author has created. Highly recommended for those who appreciate profound and heartfelt narratives.
I enjoyed the first couple chapters, then the story kept going downhill, - inconsistent characters- everyone from the main characters to the top government officials acts and talks like middleschoolers.- MC is a pretty stupid despite being portrayed to be calculating and "smart"- The author is trying too hard to make it seem that the world is hopeless.- after one event around the chapters 50s (an event that was avoidable if the mc or anyone around him actually had something resembling a working front lob) MC turned completely to a proper insufferable emo.Overall the story was bad, the promise the author gave us with the first few chapters was relatively broken, this no longer was a "misunderstanding" novel.
Overall score of 0.6, mainly because the story is clearly AI writing. There are several times in the beginning chapters that are sectioned off by titles as if given a prompt and told to go with it and the author just copied and pasted the chapter without taking out the sub-headers meant to address user-entered prompt for topics intended to be entered into the chapter. There are several times the writing loops back to an already mentioned section or characters repeating themselves or others like other AI-written stories tend to do, especially when it comes to exposition to explain certain reasoning or for why the Main Character is doing something as if the AI is for exposition prompted. At some point the author leaves in bullet points. If you're Interested in AI-written stories that are rushed and pushed out as quickly as this, enjoy. I just wished there was an AI tag for forced on books like this.
