This batch has a really interesting structural choice that I want to unpack. It starts in media res with Yun Shu collapsing, then moves to the hospital, then we get a whole chapter about the Yun family drama, then back to Yun Shu going to work, and then the restaurant attack. The author is jumping between multiple storylines and locations pretty frequently. Some of it works—the hospital scenes feel intimate and focused, Yun Shu alone in her room, the quiet conversations with Shi Muchuan and Nurse Zhang. But then we cut to the Yun family home and suddenly we're in a completely different tone. It's more dramatic, more confrontational, with Yun Ruizhe arguing with his parents. The pacing there is faster, more chaotic, which makes sense given the content. But I will say the transition from the Yun family back to Yun Shu at the restaurant felt a little abrupt. One moment we're watching Yun Shanshan come downstairs in her pajamas, and the next we're at the music restaurant with Yun Shu introducing herself to her new coworkers. There's no real bridge between those two worlds, and it made me feel like I had to reset my brain. That said, the restaurant scene itself is paced really well. It starts slow—Yun Shu meeting her colleagues, feeling out of place, trying to find the manager. The tension builds gradually as she wanders around looking for someone to talk to. And then the drunk guy appears and everything escalates quickly. The shift from mundane to dangerous happens almost seamlessly, which is good craft. The chapter ends on a cliffhanger with Yun Shu collapsing again and the manager seeing the attacker's face. I immediately want to read the next chapter. The author knows how to hook you.
I need to talk about the White Rabbit candy moment because this is the emotional core of the entire chapter and I am not okay. Su Ci holds the candy between two fingers, waves it in front of Lu Xiangbei, and then—right in front of him—puts it in her own mouth. The wrapper sound 'echoed like thunder in the quiet room.' She chews slowly, makes that satisfied 'Mmm…' sound, and says 'The flavor is pure.' While looking directly at a starving child who hasn't tasted anything this good in probably forever. This is cruel. It's also brilliant. Because what follows is the most honest depiction of desperation I've read in any novel. Lu Xiangbei doesn't just want the candy—he wants what the candy REPRESENTS. The text describes his eyes: 'The fierceness in his eyes was gone—replaced by near-mad desire. The look of a starving wolf spotting meat on a trap.' He KNOWS this is manipulation. He KNOWS Su Ci is playing with him. And he doesn't care. But then Lu Xiangdong does something that completely shifted my emotional response to this whole scene. This sickly, quiet kid who's been overshadowed by his siblings runs to Su Ci, wraps his arms around her leg, and recites a poem. Not because he's smart—because he's OBSERVANT. He heard it on the radio. He remembered it. And he's using it as currency. When Su Ci writes '[Lu Xiangdong: +3 points]' in her notebook and gives him three candies, the text says he 'trembled with excitement.' He unwraps one, pops it in his mouth, and gives his stunned siblings 'a smug grin. A victory of intelligence over strength.' This kid just proved that in Su Ci's new world order, brains beat brawn. And the look on his siblings' faces—'What just happened? Was this… knowledge changing fate?'—that's the emotional peak of the chapter. It's sweet and heartbreaking at the same time. These kids are so hungry for anything—food, recognition, a chance—that a single candy becomes a moment of pure triumph. I laughed, I cried, I immediately re-read that section.
Let me just say—this author knows how to build tension like nobody's business. The structure here is genuinely brilliant. We start with what seems like a comedic scene (the shadow guy making weird comments, Sang Nian yelling 'you grabbed the wrong person'), then BAM—she passes out and we're in her nightmare about thesis defense and deferred graduation. That's such a clever way to establish her character before dropping us into the real emotional payload. Then the story layers another dream on top of that—the dreamscape of Xie Chenzhou's past. And the pacing within THAT is where it really shines. The author doesn't rush through his trauma. We get the rainstorm scene, then the market alley, then the cage—and each one escalates. The five-year-old begging his mother not to leave him. The six-year-old getting called a monster. Then the cage sequences that span years. It's methodical, almost cruel in how it unfolds. But the real pacing masterstroke is how the barrier between Sang Nian and Xie Chenzhou physically shrinks as the dreamscape progresses. She's getting closer without her even fully realizing it. And the barrier only shatters at the moment of maximum stakes—when the blade sinks into his chest. That's not accidental pacing, that's calculated to make you feel like your heart is being stabbed too. The cliffhanger ending mid-sentence? Perfect. Just perfect.

I love this book so much. The plot is really original. The writing style is also really nice. I am looking forward to the new chapter! :)
A masterfully crafted novel that combines a tight plot with smooth story development, keeping the reader engaged from start to finish. The characters are deeply developed and diverse, and the world-building is rich with detail and realism. The author excels at portraying emotions and highlighting moments of intelligence, sacrifice, and challenge—elements I greatly admire. While some ideas are repeated, they serve to deepen the message. Despite its extensive length, the novel is truly commendable.
I'm a failure and I don't think my novel will blow up soon, I'm just doing this because I'm super bored.........................................
