I need to talk about Gu Jiayan because honestly he broke me a little. Here's this guy who genuinely believed Gu Wanrou was his sister, who doted on her for years, and the surveillance video shows him pushing Gu An'an against a wall—his actual biological sister—and the text literally says her expression was 'filled with disbelief.' Not anger. Disbelief. Like she couldn't believe HE was the one doing this to her. And then the worst part: after watching the video, Gu Wencheng reprimands him, and Gu Jiayan's internal response isn't genuine remorse. It's 'but it wasn't entirely my fault, didn't Dad also order her out?' He deflects. He rationalizes. And when Gu Wanrou shows up crying at Gu An'an's door, he's the one standing there genuinely believing they can all 'live together harmoniously.' He wants to believe the lie because the truth—that he abused his biological sister based on someone else's manipulation—is too uncomfortable. Gu Wanrou, meanwhile, is fascinating in a disgusting way. Her apology to Gu An'an isn't an apology at all. The text says it straight: 'Beneath Gu Wanrou's gentle tone lay hidden provocation.' She's literally hoping Gu An'an will explode so she can play the victim. And when Gu An'an just says 'alright, I forgive you' and closes the door? Gu Wanrou is FROZEN. She doesn't know how to process someone not playing her script. The dynamic between all three of them—Gu Jiayan trapped between loyalty and blood, Gu Wanrou weaponizing vulnerability, Gu An'an completely detached—creates this triangular tension that's honestly more interesting than any romance subplot.
I want to dig into the color symbolism here because it keeps showing up and I think it's intentional. The cola is black. In Berry's world, black is the mark of Dark Wizards — it symbolizes evil, danger, poison. So when she refuses to drink it initially, it's not just a kid being cautious, it's a fundamental cultural difference between her world and ours. She's interpreting a common beverage through the lens of her entire magical worldview. And then when she discovers it's sweet, it's a small but meaningful moment of her worldview expanding. Meanwhile, Feng Ci's apartment is white walls and black furniture — 'funeral parlor chic' as the narrator calls it. Black and white, the two poles. His world is stark, controlled, emotionally dead. Berry's world is full of color and magic and chaos. The fact that she loves his apartment despite (or because of) how gloomy it is suggests that she brings something to his space that he can't generate himself. There's also the recurring motif of 'repayment' — Berry keeps saying she wants to repay Feng Ci. In a story about two people from completely different worlds being thrust together, this concept of debt and gratitude becomes a way of building connection. You owe someone, therefore you must stay in their presence, therefore you get to know them. It's a beautiful narrative device disguised as childish logic. And Xiuxiu — the broom that acts more like a pet than an object — represents the bridge between Berry's old life and her new one. She won't let it go, she braids its hair, it taps-dances when it's mad. It's her anchor to who she was, and also the vehicle (literally) that carries her forward.

Wow. I am so glad I came across this book. Beautiful is not enough to describe it. Very well told love story and the narrative is so poetic. The characters are flawed that I am looking forward to their developments. There is smooth flow of the plot and world building. FL is stubborn but strong while the ML is vengeful and cold, with both of them in pain from their entanglements. I like there is a young son in the picture that can play a role in their healing. It’s very unfortunate both have wasted so many years away from each other. Highly recommend this to all romantics. Excellent read. To be honest, the best of the best here!
